If you can, take a trip to Varanasi (overnight train journey from New Delhi). The longest continuously inhabited place on Earth, Varanasi is one of the holiest sites for Hindus anywhere; it's where Hindus yearn to to die as death in Kashi (Varanasi) means immediate release from the cycle of reincarnation. Religion (note: NOT fundamentalism) is a part of every aspect of life in Varanasi, making the city well worth journeying to for a few days just to watch life. Not far from Varanasi is Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism.

Enjoy your trip!

P.S. Despite what happened last month, Bombay is still worth taking time out for. You'll still be very safe there and it is a city that is steeped in amazing history, architecture, and people.

Agra fort is well worth a visit, as is obviously, the taj. New Delhi is a surprisingly green city with a lot of sightseeing to do. Before last month i would have said Mumbai was me favourite city in the world, but it's probably not a good idea to travelthere now

to answer your question..it's very important to know where you are from?..if from india, then all the places mentioned by other answerers would be suitable for you....if not then its a totally different ball of game..contact me if it's the second point...and no..am not an agent or travel broker..and also no financial benefit for me..
