If you can, take a trip to Varanasi (overnight train journey from New Delhi). The longest continuously inhabited place on Earth, Varanasi is one of the holiest sites for Hindus anywhere; it's where Hindus yearn to to die as death in Kashi (Varanasi) means immediate release from the cycle of reincarnation. Religion (note: NOT fundamentalism) is a part of every aspect of life in Varanasi, making the city well worth journeying to for a few days just to watch life. Not far from Varanasi is Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism.
Enjoy your trip!
P.S. Despite what happened last month, Bombay is still worth taking time out for. You'll still be very safe there and it is a city that is steeped in amazing history, architecture, and people. |
