I am born and brought up at old Bangalore, that is Chickpet are, we were not allowed to enter the present Cantonment area, without a pass, and suit was compulsary. There was no entry to Indians at Present West End hotel and Bangalore Club.
No city buses, as the Malleshwaram, Corporation circle, Chamarajpet, were the limits. Ulsoor, then called as Halasur, was a far away place. There was a big lake, at present what we call as KSRTC bus stand.
Weather was very cool all around the year. The new academic year use to start on 21 st of March, I still remember my Mother use to put sweater, on the first day to school.
Present Bangalore is unimaginable, highly polluted. As a young boy I have seen Queen Elizabeth, John F. Kennedy and others dignitaries, entering Bangalore in open Jeep, at South Parade Road ( MG Road ), accepting flowers all the way. A pleasant, clean, Heaven then. With more than 200 lakes surrounding the City. |

Current Bangalore is dirty, over polluted, hot, glass buildings, in excess of 7.5 million people, problems galore...... net net it is another Mumbai in the making.
Old Bangalore was clean, very little traffic, pleasant weather, old Victorian style buildings, about 2 million people, safe and beautiful in every sense. It was truly the "Garden City" and "Pensioners Paradise" in every sense of the word.
Sigh !! Where has the Old Bangalore disappeared in all this modern era all in the name of development?
What we wouldn't do to see the old Bangalore back again !! |

I feel that current Bangalore has more traffic than old Bangalore. About other problems like potholes, power and water problems etc, I cannot say much, as these problems still exist.
Another major difference is that current Bangalore is 741 sq km compared to old Bangalore's 254 sq km. |
