Anna

Do Indian people have curry for breakfast? Do they eat curry for most meals?

Additional Details
The reason that I am asking is because my father had some Indian friends who enjoyed curry for breakfast every morning. And I am wondering whether this habit is typical for the majority of Indians or whether it was just my father's friends.

Oh no!!! They don't have curry everyday for breakfast!

Only in south india most people have Idli or Dosa or Uthappam and Sambhar is served with it.. sambhar is kind of an accompaniment to the main dish.
Thats the time people have something curry-like at breakfast.

And Chutney is like ketchup used in other parts of the world! it goes with anything.. french fries, pizza, sandwich, tortila chips ..anything..

Probably ur dad's friends are south indians if they have curry most of the time! :)

An Indian breakfast can anything .. we have eggs, bread, omlets, cornflakes, milk or juice... or traditional breakfast items .. and there are hundreds of these depending on the region in India!

But, most of the time an indian lunch/dinner will always have curry with rice.

Curry was invented for the English market. The Indians dont have anything called 'curry'. They eat spicy food but it all has different names.

don't be daft. Indian cuisine is far more diverse than American junk.

I lived and worked in India for 6 months, and had a great time. Breakfast was fruits, breads, and tea. The currying of food (particularly meat) was popular as the quality of the meat was generally bad for a lot of the people. It disguised the taste. I only got served a curry dish in the evenings for dinner. It would be better to call these dishes "spicy", as they were never hot like Madras or Vindaloo, but were delicately flavoured.

Do you eat the same thing for every meal?

A traditional North Indian breakfast consists of puri (fried bread) and a "curry" made from either potatoes or peas/beans. Milk or buttermilk is an occasional accompaniment.
A traditional South Indian breakfast, as described above, consists of rice & bean based dishes. Idlis are made from fermented rice and a type of black bean. Dosa is similar but resembles a fried crepe instead.

As one person pointed out, there is no such thing as 'curry' in India. It is a British term derived from the Tamil "kari" which literally means "burnt". At most, it can described as a very broad class of all spicy vegetable, bean, meat or egg based dishes.

I guess so, and the naan bread and this tandoori fried stuff too.

I was always told that curry was actually a British dish, during our occupation of India the meat supplied was not always what it should be so they put a lot of spices in to cover the taste

Curry is prepared by using Dal/vegitablles/mutton/fish, & specially prepared spices for different ingredients. It is not eaten for breakfast but necessarily included in both meals in almost all parts of India.Spices contain many herbal ingradients which help to keep your overall health intact. But too much spice can upset your bowel if eaten greedily. So be careful!!!

Sometimes, eg Puri / bhaji - curried veg and bread ... it's good.

gvbals
Curry can not be eaten alone. It is taken with any of the Indian Breads or Rice or other dishes such as Idly, dosai etc.

Most of the people don't take curry for breakfast. Its mostly taken for lunch or dinner.

Curry is a spice. They put it in most of their meals if the recipe calls for it. If it doesnt they might add it in just for the taste or not at all. The British also use it a lot too

Many Indians cannot afford what you call breakfast, many have but one meal a day. Curry powder is and was frequently used to disguise the smell and taste of foetid (Off) foods. It is also a means of keeping food from going bad by detering flies. Originally the only meat was chicken as the only other was goat but it does not keep fresh.
