In Hinduism, the cow is often, but not universally, considered sacred and its protection is a recurrent theme in which the cow is symbolic of abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for its gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. It holds an honored place in society, and it is part of Hindu tradition to avoid the consumption of beef.

The law in India

Cow slaughter is illegal.... in all of India except two provinces, the states of West Bengal and Kerala. Cows are routinely shipped to these provinces for slaughter, even though it is illegal to transport cows for slaughter across provincial borders.[13] However, many illegal slaughterhouses also operate in big cities such as Mumbai. While there are approximately 3,600 slaughterhouses operating legally in India, there are estimated to be over 30,000 illegal slaughterhouses.[14] The efforts to close them down have so far been largely unsuccessful.

From the comments I've read that were written by Hindus, they do not actually worship cows but simply venerate and respect them.

No, not now. They worshipped cows in yesteryears.
Even if I were allowed to eat beef, I won't. I hate red meat.

no all indians are not hindus . hindus only worship the cow and that also their are two sects in hindus vaishnav and shaivam . vaishnav are mostly in north india and shaivam (sankaracharya sect) are in south india. vaishnav do worship cow and in south india also some sect of sankarcharya also worship cow. as there is mere 0.005% people of hindus may be eating beef and that also in some part of country like west bengal .

Yes, cows are worshiped as gods. Hindus in general don't eat beef. Only a very small community in Hindus eat beef.

who ever worship cow ,it is because cow provide us milk . hindus worship all the livivg thing because they provide a helping hand in the life of the people and nature. everything in this world is conected to each other for survival.

As we know India is a mixed bag of religions, beliefs, faiths, people.............the list is never ending.

Am not being a fanatic, but the HINDU Religion, BTW, HINDUISM is not a religion but a WAY OF LIFE, believes that cows are sacred, they dont really worship the cow like a deity. At festivals we decorate and honor her, but we do not worship her in the sense that we worship the Deity. To the Hindu, the cow symbolizes all other creatures. The cow is a symbol of the Earth, the nourisher, the ever-giving, undemanding provider. The cow represents life and the sustenance of life. The cow is so generous, taking nothing but water, grass and grain. It gives and gives and gives of its milk, as does the liberated soul give of his spiritual knowledge. The cow is so vital to life, the virtual sustainer of life, for many humans. The cow is a symbol of grace and abundance. Veneration of the cow instills in Hindus the virtues of gentleness, receptivity and connectedness with nature.

Clueless
Yes Hinduism does not permit eating beef and they do worship cows. While Buddhism believes that they should not eat meat because animals have souls and because of reincarnation that some of their relatives and friends might have been created animals as a punishment for their wrong doings in their previous lives.

no body worships cows. but the hindus treat the cows sacred and they are agitated on the very mention of eating beef. cow slaugther is unlawful in many states of India. But it is permitted in North East, West bengal and some othe places.

jade

It really depends on which religion they follow
