Do People from India look Asian or Arab to you?

I am currently taking a class on the history of immagration in the US. My class got into a discussion about if you can identify a persons race by thier facial features. I had to be honest and say that people from India do not look Asian to me they look Arab. Lots of students in the class had the same reaction. What do you think?

This question is not about sounding off about hatred towards Indians. This questions is based on how well Americans can acknowledge other cultures through sight.

Ethnicity of Indian is a mix and you can trace Aryan, Dravidian, Negroid, Mongoliod, and many other amongst the Indians. Looks wise Indians are as diverse as their religion, geography and culture.

Arabs also have Asian ethnicity and devoid of their Arabwear they will look like Indians generally!

Once getting out of a roundtable meeting Churchill commented to Gandhi that how come Indians are black, brown, yellow where as Englishmen are only white. On this Gandhi replies that Horses come in various colours whereas Donkeys are just one shade!

Indians from different parts of India look very different from each other and there are some communities which can look similar to arabs.

However, there are communities which look like south-east asians, but they are not so commonly found in the USA.

It is strange that you said so..
Cause they Look Indian most times!

However, Indians have a mix of features with different faiths and traditions...

they look arab as in your context generally as they have more facial hair when compared to a chinese or Japanese...
Plus muslims and sikh communities generally do keep their mustache/ beard which is more towards arab...

But if you look at an Indian from eastern/northeastern parts of India (they are less visible in US of A) then they have features that are more chinese or high cheekbones
as that of a mountanious region dweller...and do not really resemble arabs..

The Indian community that you see in USA is more of south or west or bit of north India

Yes I agree. If in comparision between two ethnicities as Asian and Arab, I would say people of India(n) descent facial structure and complexion looks more "Arab."

I say this in regards to first, the eye shape. Which is very opened and round, and not small or oval (Asian). Also, the long nose and longer faces which is a common Middle Eastern (Arab) feature.

India is in Asia as are Arab, Iran ,China and Japan among many more countries.
Anthropologically, there are many racial features among Indians - they are as diverse as Americans. Indians are said to have Aryan blood. But this idea is based on their languages, about 50 of them, which are members of Indo-Germanic group of languages. Hitler notoriously believed this and tried his theory to support 'Eugeny".

This similarity is because these languages are derived from Sanskrit. Which is the most scientific but elaborate language; and closely related to Latin and the languages derived from them. Iranian language is also in the same group. But not the Arabian languages or Chinese.

So, Indians have diverse mixed features, obtained from native Indians, central Asian, European, Africans, Australian as well as Mongolian and some others to a lesser degree. Sometimes they resemble Central Americans very much.
