Yes. I visited India last year and needed a visa. An Indian visa costs about $100 for Americans (half price for many other nationalitites). You can apply for the visa at an Indian Embassy in any country. I got mine in Bangkok while travelling through Thailand. Once the visa is issued it is valid for 6 months from the issue date. If you enter India immediately, you can stay for the full 6 months. But if you wait 3 months, then travel to India, you can only stay for 3 months.

As they have said, you definitely need a visa. I just want to add one more fact that might be helpful to you. There are companies that will apply for the visa for you. You merely send in your passport to them along with two passport pictures and the visa application and they do the rest. It is fast, it is simple. I was amazing how quickly I received my passport back. I wholeheartedly recommend this! See the site below for more info.
