Do you know a safe, clean, cheap place to stay in Chennai? |
I'm coming from London to study yoga for a month. I don't have a big budget, but want somewhere that would feel a bit homely. A hostel, or maybe staying with a family? I don't have a clue what things cost - any tips? The yoga school is in the North of Chennai. What area of the city would you recommend to stay in? Somewhere fairly quiet would suit me rather than the real hub. |

You can stay in any of the mansions in Triplicane area. They will be full of bachelors, and you will get cheap lodging and food. You can also stay in any of the YMCA hostels. Check YMCA website for details. |

If you disclose the locality of your yoga school, you would be benefit with better advise. A single room in a average hotel would cost you about Rs 900 to 1000 per day (About Pounds 10 to 12 / day).
You could go to the "E-Library" page of the website referred below and you will see a searchbox "Book a Hotel". It will list several hotels by star or tariff.
There is a currency converter in the same page.
It would be best if you seek your yoga teacher's advise!
Please take a pre-paid taxi before leaving the airport to avoid an unpleasant experience with greedy taxi / auto-rickshaw drivers. |

Chennai is very cheap compared to London. I do not know about your budget and food habits. So it is better for you to come and search as rooms are available from rs. 100 ( about US $ 3 to $300) . You can have comfortable rooms for Rs. 300.($ 7) etc. So do not worry. In north Chennai it is still cheaper. But Chennai is terribly crowded and be prepared for a cultural shock as told to me by many foreigners. You can check up in internet Newspapers HINDU, INDIAN EXPRESS and Times Of India , Chennai Editions.
Do not worry you will be comfortable. |

Chennai is not very expensive in general. You can check out following Chennai travel guide at http://www.khojbin.com/Tamil-Nadu_Chennai_guide_6
In hotel section you can search for home stays, service apartments or economy hotels in area of your interests close to your Yoga canter.
Hope it helps. |
