The original name of bangalore is - An inscription found near Begur, reveals that the district was a part of the Ganga Dynasty until 1004 CE and was known as Benga-val-oru, the City of Guards in old Kannada. This name in due course after the British came to india changed due to their prononciation step by step as Bangalore.
Many cities in india have changed their names viz. Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkkota, Vadodara, Varanasi, etc.etc. So there is no harm in changing the name as Bangaluru, as per the wishes of Kanada people. |

I have seen many people telling that 'changing Bangalore's name will only create problems to Foreign Countries'. But my suggestion is Just a name change will not affect Bangalore in any way.......Instead the change in name will regain Indian culture. And why should Foreign countries have problems due to my country's name change......It is our country and we have all the rights to change the name and Foreign has nothing to do with it. ......And regarding the Business, i think it will be no where get affected with just a name change.
Since Bangalore is in Karnataka, it has to be pronounced in regional accent and not in foreign accent.
and pls all the readers must note this.

really it's GOOD idea.
but practically it's not working.
sounds like we're talking about
different place , not Banglore.
anyway,
we gain again sweet smell of native language.
not the British.
i don't have any connection with Banglore.
but i like it.
and also want to change India's name to Bharata
i always ask why people forget
to change country's name ?!!! |

You will be jailed by the Kannada activists - how can you say Bangalooru for Bengalooru? There is no point blaming the British when there is so much division amongst ourselves. In all this changing of names driven more by regional flavour than national fervour, India (or should I say Bharath?) is getting totally lost!! |

Though it is not a welcome change, the new name is also spoken almost the same way. Hence, chances that people mistake it for another place is not there. Changing place names are not healthy as place names are internationally known for many years and a sudden change will affect it negatively. However, due to political and social reasons we do change place names and that incude well known cities such as Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkotha. Compared to these cities the name change will definitely not affect B'lore negatively. |

Many other cities like bombay, madras, calcutta have changed their names to their originals. These were all anglisized names |

It sounds too good. All the argument was it will be difficult, but u know that when I refer to Bengalooru I am referring to Bangalore which is familiar to every one. If one doesnt know Bangalore they will know a city called Bengalooru. So there is no confusion.
All the tourists, foreigners, businessmen who come to India for any purpose will not have difficulty since they come well prepared. If they find Bengalooru instead Bangalore, or vice versa then they will be educated abt the reason for change.
So no confusion. |

The regional aspirations of people dictate that the cities be named as per the original local names.
If Mumbai, Kolkata , Chennai, Beijing, Myanmar & Pune are Ok what is wrong with Bengalooru ? |

gosh! how funny would it sound if an outsider would pronounce it...beng-a-loor-u....
i dont like the new name......for some cities, it sounds okay, like bombay to mumbai or madras to chennai...but BENGALOORU???? that sounds really awful |

History Repeats .. After empire BRITISH the name has been changed to BANGALORE. That is not only with Bangalore with many of our Cities and Villages.. Today our peoples trying to restore our County identity .. it was like a song saying .."Jaha dal dal par Soneki (Golden) Chidiya karti hai basera Voha Bharat Desh hai mera .. Hey Barati.." |

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF IT IS 'BANGALORE' OR 'BENGALOORU'
no it is a stupid idea to change bangalore's name cause bengalooru is such a village type name n it does not make a difference in doing so. |

NO. Most people in Mumbai call it Bombay, the station which was renamed is still reffered t a VT (Victoria terminus), Chennai is often refered to as Madrass, and Kolkutta Calcutta. |

Well, it seems odd initially. When Bombay was changed to Mumbai, Madras to Chennai and Calcutta to Kolkata, I felt a bit difficult initially, but I got used to them. Now I call Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata rather than the old names, (although some sceptics still continue to call by the old names).
Hence, initially it would be difficult, but I would get used to it, maybe in a month's time or so.
Also I would like to add something. Hope that by change of name, the face also changes, and we get better roads, better water and power supply, better jobs for everybody and cleaner Bangalore OR Bangaluru. |

Bangalore is a name that people currently identify with easily.
But, it seems that the name bangalooru has been picked out carefully and has been adequately supported.
It does take time for people to get used to a new name. So, in the short term, it might feel odd for a while. But, in the long term people will catch onto the new name.
But, ya, the name could have been simpler to use. |

Bangalore sounds more refined to me.
Bangalooru sounds less sophisticated. |

Bangalore is the garden city of India and is a developing place for IT and related fields. It is visited by several foreigners every year and it is becoming a cosmopolitan city. Bangalore should be expanded by all means but not with its name. Changing the name would be awkward. How can foreigners utter the name? It is a hub for MNCs and other foreign companies. It is good as it is.
Why are we going traditional? |
