in india people r extremely good,friendly,sympathetic,affectionate and smiley. try to come here with a very friendly attitude and very big heart. here v r always ready to make new friends.

1) You can get most medicines and toiletries you need there. If you have a favorite flavor of cough drop, bring those. The pollution in Bombay is really bad, and you will want them for your throat. You can get cough drops there, but I think they taste crappy. As for malaria meds, that is your call. They are much cheaper in India, but I had side effects with Mefloquine/Lariam. Get a cream called Odomos in India and wear long clothing especially at dawn and dusk.
1) Unlocked GSM cell phone that works on 900 mhz frequency. You can get a prepaid SIM card once you get there. Internet is everywhere in the cities.
2) Psyllium husk capsules 4-5 per day: invariably you will get (ahem) travelers trots, so psyllium husks are a great way to normalize your digetsive system without relying on harsh medicines all the time.
3) long pants or skirts -- shorts are not appropriate. For Bombay, bring something appropriate for a night club.
4) Protein Bars -- if you are a meat eater, you may find yourself craving protein. You can get meat dishes, but they tend not to be as good of quality and the vegatarian food is so much better
5) conservative, loose fitting clothes. go with sandals over shoes. socks are worthless. Outside of Bombay, India tends to be very conservative in most places.
6) Lonely Planet India. Other travel guides aren't as good on logistics.
7) Many international travel adapters don't work in India, so either make sure you find one specifically designed for India or buy one once you get there

9) Bring some wallet-size photos of yourself. They will come in handy for various rail ID cards and such (depending on how long you will be there)
10) If you are flying domestic, fly Jet Airways. It is a very nice airline -- much better than the airlines in the US and the other Indian domestic airlines. Air travel is pretty expensive for foreigners. Trains and buses are much cheaper but obviously take much longer. A great way to see the people and the country though if you have the time and tolerance.
11) Bombay can be very overwhelming. Unless you have friends or family to visit there, I'd suggest you go somewhere else first to get accustomed to India before trying to see Bombay. Quite honestly, unless you are visiting someone, I'd skip Bombay.
I assume that Bombay is your port of arrival. Do you know where you are staying your first night? It might be a good idea to figure that out beforehand, especially if you are arriving in the early hours of the morning. There really aren't many decent hotel options near the airport. Just plan on paying more than you would like for your first night. Get a prepaid taxi voucher once you get outside baggage claim. As soon as you walk outside the airport exit, you will be accosted by scores of hawkers trying to sell you taxis and hotels. Your best bet is to get everything figured out and settled on where you are going to go before you walk out the exit. Don't worry. India is a wonderful country. This is the as bad as it gets but it can be overwhelming if it is the first thing you experience upon landing.
The exchange rate at the Bombay international airport tends to be pretty decent. There is a blue State Bank of India counter. They all charge about the same once you account for fees.
12) Newer been to Orissa, but I've heard it is beautiful.
13) If you do stay in Bombay, check out a store called Fab India in the Bandara district. They have very cool Indian contemporary clothing.
