Monsoon Wedding... it's a blend of Hindi and English and gives a good intro to the culture and customs. |

Stay away from Jism!! It's terrible! I love Dil Chahta Hai, Monsoon Wedding, Lagaan... Not sure if you could really call them all Bollywood, but they are good movies. |

You could try Salaam Namaste, Hum Thum, Rang De Basanti. These are off beat bollywood movies that mix the west with India and something i'm sure you could relate to. Once you digest these.. you are ready to dive a bit deeper. |

If you wanna avoid the song-dance routine, try Amitabh Bachchan's Black, Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, Aishwarya Rai's Choker Bali, Aamir Khan's Dil Chahta Hai (does have songs, but strategically sequenced). |

- Lagaan (my personal Fave - it's a cricket movie and has Amir Kahn in it - one of the big bollywood heros - GREAT music and dancing too)
- Salaam Namaste (fun movie has Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Kahn in it... good music)
- Kal Ho Na Ho (TONS of Big Bollywood actors are in this, GREAT movie! - the plot is great too - it's made by Karan Johar - and most of his movies are GREAT) |

Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. It is not a Bollywood movie but an Indian movie that is scripted in English. So you would have no problem understanding the language (english with 2 different indian accents). A good movie meshing 2 indian cultures with no songs and dance. |

Bollywood's latest films like Dhoom 2 (action) and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (comedy) would be a great place to start...both films are in Hindi and you would need toget your hands on a subtitled DVD.
Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding is in 'hinglish' and gives a great insight into the favorite obsession of most Indians - weddings! |

LOL. I bet 100 bucks you have never watched any Bollywood movies before!
Ok, out of curiousity, I used to watch Bollywood movies on Sunday afternoons on the TV.
Dun worry abt it, ALL the movies are more of less the same. You will see for sure:
Hairy male lead
Beautiful female lead
Singing and dancing, usually in the middle of the movie
Villians
A whole group of funny meddling friends |
