Goa- Tropical Shangri-La or naff resort for chavs and hippies?

Hello can anyone help me make up my mind about Goa. I have just returned from 2 weeks in Goa and can't make up my mind about the place.

One one hand, it truly is a tropical paradise with the cheapest restaurants I have ever eaten in. The food is superb, as is the service. The Goan people are wonderful, too.

On the other hand, there is rubbish and stray dogs everywhere, english tourists with little or no motorcycling skills ( and no protective clothing) seem to be hiring Royal Enfields and acting out some sort of "Lara Croft" fantasy, and I'd have to say that the type of person this holiday attracts is the WORST I have seen outside Gran Canaria or Lloret de mar. The "beer and chips" brigade are there in all their glory, wearing Man U tops, sunburn and gold chains. And embarrassingly, most of the older English ladies seem to think they are royalty, bossing the "natives" about in quite an ignorant manner.

It's both, depending on where you go.

Oh, my. I had no idea. You've really depressed me. I went there through work about 22 years ago and the only Brits were well-heeled travellers and a few old hippies left over from the 60s... I can't believe it's got the same sort of people as you get in those resorts you mention, and others we all know and avoid.

It's down to cheap charter flights; now the 'chavellers' are off to pastures new, not learning about, or respecting, their destinations but corrupting the places they go to and p*ssing off the people. The Goan people were so lovely; no doubt they see these Brits and judge this country accordingly. What a shame.

Wildhoney
Haha, that happens wherever the Brits go. The trick is to discover a place before the rest of them do. Try Kerela (spelling?) in India- its the same lush tropical paradise, but not so touristy. Best of all there's no loud-mouthed Brits around!

Jexf
Yes Goa is going that way thanks to regular scheduled services and good prices. Still a great place and good people.

Next time fly to Trivandrum on Gulf Air. The same great beaches, food and people but less of the bucket and spade brigade.

All flights from North of Watford should only go as far as Tenerife. That would help !!

I have been to Goa several times and was there in February for a month.
I know what you are saying and agree, but you can avoid the chav Brit's if you go down South.

We are going to go next year for the last time because we can see just how bad it is getting, for example in february in a beach shack we ordered lobster and went back in the evening for it, the shack looked greatt with candles burning everywhere, just by the sea.....heaven, but guess what? It came with chips!!!!!!

Did you also note the ammount of white mini skirts and high heels prancing around?

It is a shame but Goa is getting wrecked.

Try Sri Lanka, it is real paradise!!!

Avalon
only ever been to the Leela resort hotel...and that was very nice

Abdul
yes. goa is getting ruined and fast!

whoever made that point about some British women thinking they are royalty is so on the ball. I experienced this as soon as i landed a couple of chavs shouting at the top of their voices about a begger.

What most people don't realise even is that half the people they meet in Goa are not even Goan. They maybe Indian yes, but NOT goan. You should take the time out to meet some goans, they are such lovely people and their culture is amazing. It weird to see Indians speaking perfect Portugese! but they are always so happy and smiling.

Goa, is the both, the good and ugly
