You must go to Mysore. It is a holy city, about an 8 hour drive from Bangalore.
Banglaore has a really cool national park where you can see tigers, elephants, bears and otheranimals. You take a safari bus through the park.
I was in Bangalore last March. As an American, it will be an adjustment. Little things like traffic and driving are different. Everyone tailgates and no on pays attention to the lanes. Of course they drive on the wrong side of the road too.
The food is very spicy and being primarily Hindu they are mostly vegetarians. There are people on the street who will sell you anything. Don't be afraid to negotiate with them. You'll get respect and a good deal too. Don't just pay a street vendor the first price they ask for. I bought a couple fake watches on the streets of Bangalore. The first time Ipaid what he asked since it was noly $10 US, the second time I talked him down to $5 US knowing I could haggle.
If you like beer, the Indian beer is called Kingfisher. It has a high alcohol content, but has a nice deep taste to it. It is like the Budweiser of India.
TV there is great too. MTV in India actually plays music. They play everything from American to Indian music.
Be sure to visit the Stae Department website about India. They will give you up to date information on the country. Also, the State Department website has an area where you can type in your itenerary. That why the US Government know where you are in case something happens. They can help get you out, notify family or provide assistance.
I was scared going there on my own at first, but I really liked it there, and now that I know what to expect, I would really like to go back again.
I wrote a 5 part story about my India experience in the May Report everything from driving to the food to the economy. This is from an American perspective from a person who went to Bangalore. But it gives great insight.
Have a great trip. |

India is huge like the US....so it really depends on which part you will be in.
If ur visiting the south...
definitely check out:
1. Temples in Tamil Nadu..(lot of Old/famous ones - esp in the towns of Thanjavur, Madurai, Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari, Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram...which are in continuous use + some of these are near the sea shore with some of the best beaches)
2. Kerala for its relatively pristine back-waters, kovalam beach...for surfing on beach with coconut palm-ed shoreline.
If you plan to got the plan to go somewhere else in India....hmm I'm blank about that...but I'm sure the himalayas, North-East India have scenic beauty. The state of Goa in the west is a popular tourist spot for beach goers + Rajasthan for its forts. and of course the usual Mughal architecture in/around Delhi - Taj Mahal in Agra, Qutb Minar, Fathepur Sikri near Delhi, etc. |

Yes, there are several places. There is a very beautiful state PUNJAB. One of the best places in PUNJAB is to visit Amristsar city and rush to Golden Temple, Jallian Wallaan Bagh. You could rush to city CHANDIGARH thats considered to be India's beautiful city. After that you have India's capital Delhi where you will get lots of forts and ancient places. So, "Welcome to India". |

I am not really aware when i answer this as to how long ur tour is going to be. So I will list out the places and if u can give additional details regarding the duration then I can guide u further. Well I recommend Rajasthan, Kerala, Andaman Nicobar islands and Goa as the places to see. Well amongst the above Rajasthan and Kerala have been on all tourist's itinery especially from the west so I suggest u go there. In case you are short on time skip Andaman and go to Goa. It is one of the best places in India. In case u have planned a long tour of India then pls tell me the duration and in general ur interests. If u r interested in seeing the tempples or not, if u r interested and can spare time then places close to the above mentioned places. Also the places mentioned above are states. So Each state has about 3-4 smaller towns worth going , except for Goa. So feel free to ask any further details. |

Since India is pretty large you might want to decide what all you want to see based on how many days you have. The obvious options are to stick to one of the major regions - north, south, west or east. If you want to hop between regions, you will need to take a few cross-country flights. Here are my favourite sites for information on travelling in India.

Visit Rajasthan. This season, it's chilling weather, but for Americans, it must be normal. Taj Mahal is a must on the list. Ooty, Queen of hill stations is one more to visit. There are many festivals that are celebrated, I think Gujarat has one now.
This is a good site. Refer this... http://incredibleindia.org/
Refer this site: http://www.holidayiq.com/ for ratings of hotels in your places of interest.
Buy Outlook Traveler magazine as soon as you land in India. |

The answer to your question depends on where you are planning to visit. Have you tried couchsurfing.com? Its a online community where you can ct people/families you can stay with while travelling.
India's culture and people are part of a huge diverse community... yet linked together under one country. A melting pot of color, sights, sounds and unique experiences.
You might find some useful information on Lonely Planet too. Bon Voyage! |
