if u r asking for the wedding, thenanswer is saree by all means.buy a chiffon embroidered saree with stars and sequins in a bright colour like deep red, turquoise blue or orange.complete yr garb by fantastic antique jewellery or pearl or american diamond jewellary.wear everything-necklace,bindi,earrings,match... bangles, rings and anklelets(payal)
no age bar,no region bar,no slim/fat bar-every woman can wear this.if u do as i am telling u will get a unique experience.
apart from wedding, ofcourse u can wear anything from skirts, jeans to capris etc,but if u want to get the fantastic experience and feel extremely feminine ,princess-like and gorgeous then go for embroidered salwar suits with flowing chunni.... and lots of matching bangles, big earrings and payals.....
i will tell u a secret-u coming from foriegn and wearing this indian stuff would make many people swoon....and envious....! |

Welcome to India.
Wear whatever you like without showing much skin. |

It'd be great to wear kanjiwaram sarees (for women) and lungi-kurta or dhoti-kurta (for men) at south Indian weddings! |

In India most of the people who come to wedding ceremony wear traditional dresses ,, , I dont think u would be able to get into a sari and be comfortable ,, but why not try some "salwaar kameez" ...
Any way a dress or a evening gown would be fine , just dont show too much skin , ask the person to whose wedding u are going to about decency level ,, but i would think -- cleavage is a big no , but shoulders are fine ,, |

In India, people usually wear sarees, especially those, who are already married. Young people, may wear salwars or some simple evening dresses.
You, actually, have only two options: whether to wear Indian dress, or simple evening dress. See as for the comfort, because there you will definitely dance and walk, sit - so it is difficult to do, if you've never wore saree before. You may take a risk and try it on. If no, then i would advice you to wear some nice long evening dress. Shoulders may be opened - it's okey, or if it is opened too much, you may buy some nice silk scarf over it.
Best of luck! |

I can't answer from a cultural point of view, but I went to an Indian wedding last year (in Mumbai) and it's very cheap to buy authentic clothes out there - plus you get a great memento to remind you of the day ;-) |
