I was living in India for over a year and traveled a lot too. It's an amazing experience, I would definitely recommend it! I didn't make it to the east coast at all - but went around the mountains, the centre, west and south...

I absolutely would recommend Rajasthan - go to Pushkar, Jaipur(pink city), Jodhpur (blue city), Udaipur (palaces - Octopussy bond movie was filmed there) and Jaisalmer for a camel safari. The mountains are stunning - Leh is breathtaking, like walking on the moon!, Kashmir is great -Srinagar (don't be conned by people in Delhi, go yourself and find your own accommodation). Mc Leod Ganj where the dalai lama lives is worth a visit. Go to Mumbai!!! It's electric and a total Indian experience... Varanasi, for the same reasons, but it's older, on the banks of the Ganges and of religious significance. Delhi is crazy and chaotic but I still love it, you can see both old and new and do some shopping. If it's a choice between Goa and Kerala - I would recommend the latter, it is so diverse - in Kerala you can see beaches, tea plantations, mountains, and the beautiful backwaters.

Oh and of course u need that all-important Taj Mahal pic, but it can be seen in one day... As for advise - don't believe the lonely planet, you can wear almost anything - jeans, t-shirts, even dresses and heels in clubs like in Delhi or Mumbai! Indian girls get very dolled up there! But, in trains, or out of the city, just make sure you're not showing too much - i.e. above the knee or any cleavage. Just for your own good! :)

Enjoy it!

I'm currently in India and I love it! I've been here for three months and I'll be leaving in about a month. So far the experience has been magnificent. Everyone is so hospitable and nice. Though if you're a foreigner, people tend to stare a bit and take pictures of you. Be warned about that.

I loved India, it was busy and dirty but I thought it was amazing!
The majority of the people were friendly, towards the end of my stay I was used to strangers coming up to me in the street for a photo as I have white skin.
Make sure you haggle for everything as you will be taken advantgae of -Much like other holiday places!
I was lucky enough to stay with a family in the North and lived in their home, ate their food and slept in the garden with them under the stars was a great experience! One top tip though would be to take night trains, its much cooler and your saving money on hotels if you buy a sleeper ticket its fairly comfortable,
Have an amazing time!

Yes. I visited for a month in May/June and loved it. There's definitely nowhere like it.

If you do go in March you will avoid most of the extreme heat that comes later, depending on which part of the country you're heading to. I will admit that this did play a part with me: air-con is almost unheard-of in India, and when I went, things were really starting to step up -- all I could do was lie on the bed under a fan and pant when the temperature reached 46 degrees (about 115 Fahrenheit).

If you are from a Western country (i.e., Europe, North America, Aus./NZ) be prepared for some serious culture shock. I thought I had experienced it when I visited Europe for the first time, but it was nothing to what I felt in India.

Don't let any of that scare you, though. I loved it so much that I'm planning on going back next spring!
