Have you been to India?

I'm thinking of going to India for a one month yoga instructor training course. What's it like? What's the food like? I understand I'll be immersed in yogic lfestyle: diet, exercise, sleep, everything.

On a side note: I am trying to get pregnant right now... If I'm pregnant, are there any special concerns I should have about traveling in India?

Ive lived in India for 20 years before moving to US. Things you need to understand are several Is not vacation, its adventure. Lots of things you take for granted should not be (electricity, clean water, toilets everywhere, things working on time, personal space to name a few). Prepare like you are going camping! India is not really scary criminally but there is a lot petty theft, cheating and stealing. Internationals attract more attention, and are discriminated as people who 'don't know', becuase they are very much naive about things the way they are..

As for food: Indian food is varied and depends on location. North and Northwest is primarily wheat and dairy based food groups. South and midsouth is spicier food than other places. Eitherway indian food may be 'different' to you but unlike other asian, there is really no wierd food (no game and foal, no organs, no large mammals, no reprocessed meats, etc.,). A good 25% are vegetarians (mind you not vegan, they take dairy), due to religious reasons mostly, which means, their vege foods don't touch/get cooked with meaty foods. Make sure you get enough protein. Since cleanliness is the single biggest cause for disease (bacterial not viral), take some common medications and locate a medical care provider before you gete sick (count on50% chnace of contracting something orother that is temprorary sickness in nature). Drink bottled water that is not sold roadside (often refilled and sold for a fraction of price). Create friendships with families and middle class people. The rich cheat, the poor cheat, the middle class have too much pride to cheat or exploit! Do not get into relationships with individuals, cross cultural love/empathy is often not real!

India is a fabulous place to visit but there are a few bad qualities in India. As for yoga, India is the best place. And talking 'bout food, dont miss it.you will go gaga over it once you taste it India's food is the best. And if you are pregnant, you should try and go with a man as India is unsafe for women. If you are going to south India, very good. Hope Ur trip will be nice to my India

I'm not Indian but I work with a few. They eat a lot of foods with curry & yogurt, lots of vegetables & bread. Many are vegetarians. Cant answer your other questions but I'd be concerned about the pregnancy issue. Many people take medication to prevent tropical illnesses like malaria when going to India & illness or meds might not be the best thing if you are pregnant.
