Service in Air-India is comparable with any other international airlines. the food served in Air-India flight is extremely good, especially for indians.
air-India flights are not at all cheap. only the domestic flights which departs at night are cheap as night fares are charged.

yes, it's a fine airline. it's cheap because it's domestic, not international, so costs are down. but it's safe and friendly. the meals are better than on most american carriers, if you like indian food of course.
