If you have an indian relative you can, or if you stay in India for a certain period of time. Contact the Indian Bureau of Immigration at:

go online and search for the indian embacy, there should be a phone number on site give them a ring and they will send out to the forms to your adress OR go into your local post office and ask them, but normally to apply for residance you have to have interveiw at the embacy anyway!

No, sorry. India does not have dual citizenship with any country. You can still move to India without needing an Indian passport. All you have to do is get yourself registered in the place you wish to live. Please, do not confuse "living there" with simply being able to move around as a traveler inside the country. India likes to keep track of the people they let stay. What I did was have my friend/now husband take me to the local LIU and use his address as my own. After a little paperwork, minimal fees and a little baksheesh the paperwork went through. i could then stay there up until the duration of my passport validity. Even though I am married now, and have been living solely in India for 5 years, I am still not entitled to an Indian passport without first giving up my original American one. You could register without the help of a friend, although I suspect your costs will be a bit higher...You do however NEED a stable address. If you are going for spiritual practice then an Ashram is a good address to have. Good Luck!

One thing about this I know for sure - Indian gov does entertain dual citizenship NOW.

You should first apply for a long term visa. Long Term visa valid for 5 years is issued to people of Indian origin only. It makes the subject easier if you have an Indian spouse. After living for some years in India, you can apply for an Indian passport, after surrendering your British Passport. There are people of foreign origin with various passports living for a long time in India. They are mostly nuns, monks and priests.

are you willing to give up the current passport you hold, whatever nation it belongs to? And are you of Indian origin? I think Indian gov doesn't entertain dual citizenship

GENERAL PERMISSIONS

Reserve Bank has granted general permission to NRIs/PIOs, for undertaking direct investments in Indian companies, under the Automatic Route purchase of shares under Portfolio Investment Scheme, investment in companies and proprietorship/partnership concerns on non-repatriation basis and for remittances of current income. NRIs/PIOs do not have to seek specific permission for approved activities under these schemes.
The Reserve Bank of India has now further simplified financial transactions by NRIs/PIOs by granting general permissions to :

After the above changes come into effect, the areas in which facilities available to NRIs/PIOs/OCBs will be the same as available to domestic residents except relating to investment by NRIs/PIOs/OCBs in real estate/agriculture and plantation business Chit Funds, Nidhis or Print Media.
