Hi, I live in what used to be a beautiful place once upon a time. Name is Cochin in Kerala, India. Cochin has?

grown so much that it has accumulated so.... much waste. We do not have a solution to the waste crisis we are facing now. So please some one give us a solution to our stinking problem. Pretty soon we will be covered in worms and what not. desperately seeking a solution to this problem

Many cities, Pune for instance follow a very systematic garbage disposal system, They sort out the recyclable stuff and the Bio degradable waste and put it in separate garbage bags for easy disposal. Things that can be reduced are sent to industries that can utilize them. The other waste is put in pits for making compost. Many societies are following this system.
We Indians also

there are different solutions to different type of waste like use earth worms to decompose organic waste and make manure

treatment plant for sewerage waste
recycle plastic and you need to have a proper waste disposal program

I am also a resident of Kochi and I feel that this problem has a lot to do with the malayalee 's mindset about cleanliness. As long as we continue to be a people without civic sense it will only get worse. We have to extent our concept of cleanliness to not only our physical body, our home and our backyard but to the neighbourhood also. Agreed that the authorities are useless. But we have to learn to be more civic and then play the blame game. OR ELSE GOD FORBID, SURAT SHALL LOOK LIKE NOTHING

Its we all citizens are to be blamed for.
We do not wake up until a disaster hits up.
All the Inidan cities need at least once attack of Plague like Surat. Only then we will improve.

whats the differance,I come to cochin so often and it's not the people who are not to blame every one should pull there weight around and do some thing about it.
reycycle plants should be set up.
employe people to a minimum vage to sort things out.
good luck.
give people job's to clean place's up and see the differance.
tell the government to pay for it.in no time the city will look clean and people will have a better standerd of living down to have a job to go to and do.
good luck.

I have given he excerpts from the article shown as source. You may go through the site to get all the data you need.
The Cochin Project
3.1. Background
Cochin Urban Poverty Reduction Project is a joint venture of Corporation of Cochin and
DFID, India. The Cochin Urban Poverty Reduction Programme (CUPRP) is implemented through the Urban Poverty Alleviation Department (UPAD). The goals of this project are Sustained improvements in livelihood in Cochin and replicate the model throughout the state.
The CUPRP project period is from April 1998April 2004, and project outlay is 70.76 Cores.
Sanitation component of CUPRP project is included in the Infrastructure Development of the City wide programmes. The budgeted amount for the Sanitation Programme is Rs 382 lakhs Though Sanitation was regarded as a key intervention in environmental health and poverty
reduction strategy in the UPAD Programmes, it was taken up only in the last years of intervention due to various constraints. They have been exploring the cooperation of various agencies for technical support, implementation facilitation etc, but did not succeed. It was only in December 2002 the Cochin Corporation decided to seek the assistance of SEUF for technical expertise to sanitation and support for capacity building. The strategy for implementing the sanitation programme was based on UPAD’s previous experience of community contracting works by beneficiary groups. 7000 applications from latrine less families of the 66 divisions of Cochin were received. The project was to complete 6300 latrines for the latrine less and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families by Dec.2003.The objective of this environmental sanitation programme is to ensure total sanitation in cochin through community participation and hygiene promotion activities
