Hi depends what you like
Nature , Culture, wild life , beaches , temples(ART) and diversity
then visit south India
Want beaches Fun and city life visit west goa
and more of hill stations commercial tours and historical places packed in a small area visit
rajasthan and delhi agra and notrth to uttaranchal for wildlife and scenic hill stations
EAST is also good ( only sikkim and darjeling)but very sparse and not worth the effort until and unless u want to visit north east area
About kashmir u can visit safely with some tour packages from kesari tours or any other |

India is a very great place. There are a lot of places to see there but as you said, 2 weeks is a very short time. I think you should start with north. There is taj mahal in new delhi which is one of the seven wonders.
Than kashmir is among the most beautiful place. But I am not sure whether it is safe to go there.
South is also a very beautiful place. Kerela is very beautiful. There are many beautiful places to see in Kerela. |

I love southern India. The tropical rainforests in the Western Ghats are a wonder! Kerala, the sharavathi national park and silent hill are beautiful. Plus the food in the south is fabulous, except maybe Punjab...Happy Traveling! |

Two weeks is very short time to explore India -- start with one or two specific locations. I recommend New Delhi (Agra - Taj Mahal) , Udaipur/Jaipur (Palaces), Goa (beaches). These places are likely to be used to foreign tourists. Please read up /study about the places and the history. You will be amazed to how much you will enjoy.
Kashmir may be OK once you are done with basic tour. For your two weeks - please do not consider these. Sikkim, Darjeeling, vistas of Himalayas are of course unparalleled travel experiences - keep them for your next visit!
Contact any tourist agency - perhaps something through a hotel chain. Make sure your vaccinations are all up to date. Respect local culture. Respect the fact that if you travel from a westernized country you do not have the immunity the locals have (therefore, do not go for tasting roadside delights).
Now is the time to get your connections of Indian friends renewed. It is better to have a known local accompany you if you plan to brave it on your own. When you say you are planning to go with your family, please make sure they all can walk, take in the humid/hot environment, do not get sun burn easily, etc.
Good luck with your trip! There is no place like India - its diversity, languages, art, dance, music and people.
