Medha <3

Hi, well i just came back from India from holiday and I was wondering why people stare at me so much...?

well basically everyone does.
well i get that rickshaw people & laborers stare but then also when i walk on roads they all stare and i'm only 13 and when i'm in the car they try and look into my window and won't stop looking until the light has gone green.
it's not like i wear revealing clothes or anything, in fact when i went to a large temple i wore very Indian clothes and people were still staring and other people were wearing western clothes...
it happens at temples, shopping malls, amusement parks, roads etc..my parents have noticed it happens a bit too much and they gave me a huge lecture about how i should never return their gaze but I don't get why they all do that..when i went to this bazaar or something like that, all the men in their stalls were staring at me and then they all joined together in like a group and were saying stuff to each other and were shuffling towards me but my dad realized and said something to them and they all went away.. i mean for goodness sake there was white people around who they normally tend to look at but they just ignored them and wouldn't stop staring at me...
don't get me wrong i love India and going on holiday there is great it's just the stares that confuse me..
explain anyone??

it wasn't a village.
place called Calcutta, Kolkata. pretty big city.
i'm normal complexion not that fair but not dark either
i'm ok with people looking for like a split second and then leaving me alone but everyone there just stares on & on & on and think it's completely ok.

Well, there are two types of people in this world. The first ones who get attracted by physical appearance of a person. And then there are the others(like me) who get attracted to the person by his / her internal qualities and beauty. So while you were there in rickshaw and then in the bazaar, the first ones were looking at you & appreciating your external beauty and while you were there in the temple, the other people over there, were apppreciating your internal beauty(which is very to find nowadays).
So, don't feel embarrased. Rather feel glad that GOD has made you beautiful both externally and iternally as well!

well as far as i see your question u went to a village in india. if its true then everyone over there wanted to do their bussiness with foreigners as they get more money except the people on signals who were starring at you. sometimes people get amazed by seeing fair coloured people.well as far as temple is concerned i think the boys were guys like me who just look once and then just say ok, except some loofers who just keep starring at girls. if it was city then plz let me know i wont go there as i am going back india this august.

Maybe you resemble an Indian filmstar or your mannerism is definitely foreign to India.

Im in the same boat as you; i am 15, 100% indian, live in CA, USA and go every year to visit family... people do have a habit of staring there... i love india, but some things are hard to get used to. I dont really think that they stare at just us, a lot of ppl there just have a habit of staring. we just get stared at more, because we generally dress differently or talk differently. my mom noticed when we were there a couple months ago too, she was the one that brought it up... then i noticed that yeah that is true!! lol!

I am Indian, I live in NZ.
I do 100% agree on what u said. Normally they stare at white people because they different
Another reason is "They don't know it is rude to stare too much".

You must be good looking girl :) plus kids who grow up in USA are generally taller than average same age kids in India. You you may look like 16-17 may be.. and even though you are 100% indian your mannerism, speaking style etc may be different and attracted attention. My sister's daughter is just 6 , also 100% indian as you call it.. but wheneevr she's in India... everyone stares at her :)
I guess people everywhere find foreigners amusing.. and Indians especially crowd you might see in shops/roadside are not ashamed of showng there amusement!
As your parents said.. just ignore ! You don't want to give anywrong signals!

AK
you either look stunningly beautiful.....
or you look like a freak....
figure out which one and you have the answer yourself...
have fun in ur next trip ;-)

it's completely normal, it happened to me too. I am a guy and I am not the most handsome guy in the world but still they were staring at me too. May be our body language and looks are different than them.
I don't know the real reason, I had this question in my mind but never thought about asking it on yahoo cause i am sure no body can answer it correctly.

i am indian, living in minnesota, us, and heard the same kind of experience from others who went to travel india. being an indian guy, i think you seem different from average indian girls of your age, and thats why people were staring at you. so, if you generalize it, the reason of staring stands as,, attention towards something, which is not average. i think it has nothing to do with being perv and you shouldnt be worried either, the best thing you can do, is just ignore it.

nitin_in_doon
My advice, just get on with your life and forget about it. It is as much a part of India as the garbage on roads, so if you come to India, expect it and ignore it. It is of absolute no value to debate it.

Medha are you white skinned?? Indian men have fascination for white skin.. and the shoppers stared at you because foreigner are usually good buyers.. even if you wear Indian clothes your mannerism must be different from others

Even though I am a typical south Indian woman People stare at me because I am tall for a Indian girl and I wear bright colors so I am used to it...

Eli
guess thats india for you..unwanted attention..loads of it for foreigners..
