How can Marks and Spencers sell T-Shirts for £25+ but have them imported from India's sweatshops?

Ive been watching a documentry, which stated one of the UK's biggest importers of t-shirts is M&S, which buys them from India, where they are made in the sweatshops! Why does M&S sell them in Britain for £25?

Sadly, because they can. Things are only worth what people are willing to pay. The British are well known for digging deep into their pockets and paying through the nose. I think that says it all. I once saw a calender in M&S, which was £7.00. I bought an identical one in another store and it cost me £1.99.

to make the biggest profit possible.
sad but true.

99% of retailers in the UK, Europe and America do the same this is not M&S exclusive.

They pay tens of millions of pounds to rent or pay rates for there shops in the big cities, they have a high wage bill etc. They are simply doing what is in the best interest of their shareholders, that is what they are there for.
If they could sell them for 50 pounds I am sure they would, however they can't. Take a look at M&S financials, they are by no means making a fortune from their business

T shirts are very cheap India. At Thirupur cost of Teashirts are some times quoted in price per kg.Manufacturers get the logo and your company name printed free of cost for bulk purchases. They manufacture according to BSS and other international standrards.Cheap labour keeps the price low.Sellers in UK make huge profis on sale of "made in india" goods.

I noticed at the weekend that M&S were selling crappy t-shirts for 20 bucks each in their store, what a rip off.
Thet also get clothes made in Portugal, not just India. It is all still cheap labour.
The clothes are crap.

Marks are not the only ones who do this...Next do too...i spent 20 quid on a shirt which was made in India...& i took it to India for my holiday...mad eh?!

it should not be allowed but they do it to maximise their profits!

Maybe to pay rent and taxes, which I hear are high in London.

After taking into consideration their over inflated overheads including transportation, advertising, wages, bills etc, they still probably make £20 per shirt.

Don't buy labels.

You can probably get the exact same product for £1.50 without their label.

M&S pay good money to the manufacturers in India.

But, let me ask everyone this question.

If the workers in these 'sweatshops' were paid the same as workers in the UK, there would be no point in having the t-shirts made in India - you might as well make them here and save on the transport costs. So if you all had your way there would be millions of workers in places like India and China that would be out of work, starving. Is this what you want?
