How can a young woman travel safely in India without having set destinations or a travel partner?

I am a 22 year old woman and I would like to travel to India this September (or thereabouts). My main goals are to discover the differences in culture, and learn about the traditional drumming and dancing (possibly participating if I am welcomed). I am hoping for a culturally enlightening and fulfilling adventure, but am afraid that in my ignorance I will make stupid mistakes, risking my safety. Any advice from Indians and non-Indians alike would be greatly appreciated!

hi,

india is a safe place if you follow few rules here, just dont go lonely places in night, try visiting arts & cultures center in the office timings, do not stay at new places, always take a crowdy [u will find plenty of crowd almost everywhere] route to go and come, opt for city center hotels, travel by air, do not wear revealing dresses, buy a local mobile handset and number temporarily [go for cheaper mobile if u dont want to use in future], save telephone numbers of your hotel at every city you visit.
there are plenty of tourist travelling safely everywhere in india so you are sure to meet people of similar interests to you.

best wishes,

Generally stick to the larger cities, poplular tourist circuits, they are safer. Also south india is generally safer then north India. The rule of the thumb is stick with the crowded areas and you should be safe

u can always take a tourist guide with u.u can first visit south india n then move to north india.south india is more safe n u have a lot of dance and music skools only in south india.each state of india has a different culture.i m sure u will have a nice time.its better u fully travel in airplanes n not in trains n buses.this would be safe.dont buy everything u see in the roadside.they will hike the prices and sell it.try learning atleast a few words of the local languages

I guess so.
India is not exactly a land teeming with predators. If you dress and behave conservative enough, chances are nobody will even notice you.

For discovering the cultural diversity, you will need to tour the villages. Just ensure you have proper lodging arranged beforehand when you visit remote locations.

If you are visiting South India, pay a visit to Kerala Kala Mandalam http://www.kalamandalam.com/

It is perfectly safe, if you follow common sense. Buy a Lonely Planet India guide, latest edition, that should be enough. if you have specific queries, email me !!

Dear Kainai...

First of all I welcome you to India. India is country of great diversity. You would definitely enjoy your visit. Since you are taking advice from people much in advance regarding potential risk while you travel to India...I have every reason to assume that you are a sensible young women...and therefore...there should be no problem...you will find your way. Only thing that you need to plan is number of days you are going to be in India...places of your interest...
Visit site www.incredibleindia.org which is the official website of Ministry of Tourism, India.
For safety purpose keep a mobile with you....and keep in touch with some known one....to keep an update on your location.

Take a mobile connection of BSNL, which is having wide coverage, cheaper than most other service providers. This connection would be most useful if you plan to travel the remote areas.

Wish you best of journey...good luck
