India has the world's second largest population and one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
But these are testing times for the country. Despite increased wealth and a burgeoning urban middle class, the vast majority of India's rural population remains illiterate and impoverished.
There is tangible economic improvement in India. It surprises me because the wealth generated is in spite of widespread political corruption, poor infrastructure, red tape at every level of business, sometimes militant labor unions, and inadequate social institutions. It gives an indication of the country's immense potential, and obviously it also presents the long journey to unleash that potential. I believe that as the economy continues to grow and the middle class broadens, the debate for more liberalization and better governance will grow. In effect, I hope economic growth will force better governance, and better governance will feed more economic growth. |

it is annoying, to me, to read negative comments about india and its progress, considering some of the neanderthal behaviours of so called "progressed" countries such as america. india is nonaggressive compared to a lot of other countries. it was colonised and therefore a lot of its wealth was stolen, and then left with a system of governance that it did not evolve itself. nearly all of the colonised nations were left to adjust to the western world, that had made itself wealthy through "rape and pillage". india, for one, has a ginormous population and a lot of adjusting, to incorporate their unique culture within the framework of a democracy. it IS progressing, so get off its back and let it evolve at its own pace. those from other countries should be concentrating on the negative aspects of their own backyard because there are many imperfections in the "so called " first world nations. |
