Well the thing is there are various levels in the police force. The lowest rung or the entry level are not provided with guns. They are usually undergrads. Over a period of time in service they get gun training and are promoted. Very few of them moves beyond sub-inspector or inspector or station in charge level.
Indian police laws are age old ones. Moreover, gun culture in India is rarely seen till recently. Also even the dreaded criminals prefer not to confront the police using arms rather with hard currency only. |

When in India you will notice first that there is a military presence before you notice that their policeman don't carry guns.
India is also part of the Commonwealth and because the Brits spent so much time there, they are influenced by the british culture in this regard. The ordinary 'Bobby' (English policeman), does not carry a gun either. In Fiji, another Commonwealth country, the police are not armed with guns. ISN"T THAT GREAT!!!!??
You will discover, though, that where police are not armed with guns, there is usually a military force which takes on on a much more visible role than they would otherwise...such as in Australia, Canada etc, where the police are armed with guns but their military is only seen in ceremonies or fighting in a foreign wars, as opposed to manning road blocks, diplomatic body guarding and airport security etc as you will see in India and Fiji
I think it's great for the police not to be armed as most law enforcing does not require them to shoot anybody. However, I always feel a little irked by the presence of military in countries where the police carry only a baton.
You will find also, that countries where ordinary police are not equpped with guns, there is usually a special force, or elite force that do have firing weapons to combat serious threats that normal police cannot deal with. |

Good question, I never noticed that. Maybe its because guns are expensive, and require proper training to use. What if they did have guns? |

Because gun holsters, like everything else, are now made in China, and India and China are unfriendly and they, the Indians, cannot get the holsters, so there is no place to stick them guns.
Here in Canada, the people are forbidden to use guns to protect themselves and their children. However, we are permitted to use harsh language. |
