Citizens of the UK can apply for a tourist visa which is valid for 6 months. You should apply for it at least a month in advance.
Contact your nearest Indian embassy to apply for the visa. You can download an application form from the website below.

FYI, all visas start from the date of endorsement, and not the trip!

they will give you a permit from the date they recieve your application and that visa will last for six months

Well tourist visa is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. So if you want to go in say, November and you get your visa in September, then you can stay till March 2007. So short term visa normally means a maximum period of six months
