Find out the name of the place were your ancestors lived. Then we can be exactly sure where it is Bangladesh , India or Pakistan. Before 1947 Bangladesh, India and Pakistan was one country ruled by the British. Indian and Pakistan gained independence in 1947 and Bangladesh gained independence in 1971.

Do you know what city your relatives came from? You could see what side of the border your family lived. Also, the divide was roughly Muslims in Pakistan, Hindus in India, so you could base it on their religion. There really is no point in choosing though, before 1949 India and Pakistan were under British control as the same country (actually Portuagal had part of India until the 1960's), it was 1949 that they split into separate countries.

Pre- Partition my mom's and dad's family was dispersed throughout the Punjab of India. During partition, the relatives who lived in the Pakistani side of Punjab migrated to India. But, the relatives who use to live in the Pakistani side of Punjab did not consider themselves Pakistani. They were Punjabi first, then Indian because the concept of Pakistan didn't suit their tastes.
So you may also call yourself Indian rather that Pakistani because Pakistan is only a 61 year old state. India has been here for millenium.

You should learn something about India dear, it has your answer, Pakistan and Bangladesh are Indian in ethnicity, and once in nationality.

Ask your parents/grandparents name of the place you came from and find it on the map. Whichever country it is in is your answer.
Also as you said your ancesters migrated in 1800s so it was still all India at the time, so you can just say you are of Indian origin.
I personally feel that since yours is probably 3rd generation out of India it shouldn't really matter to you :)

Very very unfortunate good question by some body who lives other than Ino-Pak -Bangladesh .What a fate of the people of once undivided India .This is really unfortunate that people ,humanbeing divided on the basis of religion in this very part of the world once called undivided India where civilisations start date back 6000 years ago .Still the spot of that ancient civilisations can be seen in LOTHAL(harappan) a 90 km from Ahmedabad ,Gujarat state of India and Mahenjodoro (60 km from Lahore of Pakistan.Alas | this 6000 years old civilisations cannot be seen by anybody from India and Pakistan due to strict law of Visa .I wonder last 5940 years people were together and care for this civilisation and suddenly last 60 years the lust ,greedyness ,hatred has robbed that freedom .Are we call us human? then I invite all to answer that unfortunate question raised by one of our brother

If you feel attracted towards Kasab and are glad about what happened in Mumbai on November, then you are surely Pakistani. But if you feel completely opposite than what I have mentioned, then you surely are Indian. It's in the genes and DNA mate, no offense :)
