How do i live india yet living away from it?

I left India 5 years ago. I live in Canada now, living in the cold between the white snow. The Indian friends i have here are barely indians. Their names and looks are indian but their habits and ways of living r fully western. I want to decorate my room in a way that when i enter it i feel like i am in india. This way i am not away from it though i am. I need tips to bring an completely beautiful, cultural, traditional, girly indian look to my room. Any interior designers?

How big is your home?

Following are list of materials which vritually makes your home into Indian style

1. Musical instruments like Veena, Tabla, etc. (atleast their photographs will do)
2. Photographs of Taj, Gateway of India, or if you are a southindian, Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tanjore Temple etc.
3. Choose your regional symbol and keep their miniature
4. Eat preferebely Indian food, like Tandoori, South Indian etc.
5. Talk only Hindi or whatever your mother toungue
6. In leasure time wear dhoti etc.

If your pocket allows, take a break and holiday in India during the severe winters of Canada.

Regarding decoration, whenever you visit to any Gujarat or Rajasthani festival/shop, pick up some colourful stuff that will make your room bright and more Indian. Hang Dupattas of different colours to your ceiling, use toran on your door, adorn the walls with Rajasthani paintings and some furniture.

Best option is to have a job in a multinational, so u can have the cake & eat it too. Or u can put all sorts of Indian photos on ur wall

Get a job which allows you to have a foot in both words. Live in cyberspace too :-) Unreal, but works. http://fn.goa-india.org

I offer you one good website... I think you will find the rest ... it is: www.ishopindian.com .... you will like it ... it is quite Indian ... .... also, are there not any Indian sections near you that have Indian newspapers.... they would have advertisements... just get on your computer and type in things like "Indian rugs" or "Indian Shopping portals" ... and things will start to lead to other things,,, don't worry, be happy! Go!

Forget the room decore and visit India frequently. Also follow Mr Saint's advice given above. Maintain you culture and tradition and celebrate all the indian festivals especially Deepavali and Janmastami (assuming you are hindu) and have lot of Indian friends around at all times. Association is most important. I am pround of you for you thoughts.

hi there ! nice thoughts,, how many indians think like this ?? i guess vey few ! u left india 5yrs ago,, then ,,go back have a look around ,,,, or think of the ambience u loved most or remember the old times, and u wont need any interior decorator,,, and keep one tulsi plant somewhere in the midle of u room if practicle,,
thats it,, u'll feel like home ,,being away from home !!!
