Bravo!! All the answers give lot of guidelines for controlling the deteriorating traffic of Bangalore . If every department connected with it will do best to deal with the problem, to certain extent it can be regulatated.

1.Select a flat near your office
2.You can use a bike
3.Check traffic upadates given by FM RJs for traffic jams.
4.Short distances...keep walking.
5.Start as early as possible from your home.
If you own a car you will find the hell near DXB while searching a parking space!
On a serious note
Bangalore needs good and effective public transport systems

Car pooling should be certainly encouraged..that would help matters a bit, but unless radical changes are made, it would be difficult to improve the current situation
Increase and improve the quality of public transport system like...
Over head 'air bus'
Underground 'metros'

Discourage people owning their cars and private vehicle by introducing very high city tax.

Increase and improve the quality of public transport system like...
Over head 'air bus'
Underground 'metros'
Then tunnels like rat holes as in Paris for road transport

Provide better infrastructure in the city outskirts and attract the business people to venture their companies over there, people will move over there and decongest the city.

The government can think of twin city concept like Delhi, NewDelhi, Hyd & sec'bad.

If you meant exterminating traffic jams,it does'nt seem possible with increase in both human & vehicular population. What can be done is trying out the western system of car-pooling to start with, which already is in practice by most IT co. employees.Another is offering lifts to all and sundry when commuting even on bikes as there is quite a sizeable population of them in B'lore

It is high time that Bangalore had Sub urban train net work in the form of METRO/SURFACE or SKY trains. For the time being certain areas which regularly gets clogged can be made one way during peak hours like it is done in Bombay. Flyovers at some of the important junctions should be constructed on top priority.Sharing of auto rickshaws by people traveling to the same destinations and using bicycles for distances below 5 km can work wonders. If cars are used it can be shared by like minded people for commuting to offices.

The root cause of a traffic jam is the number of trips by vehicles outnumber the designed capacity of the road/intersection. Thereby overflowing and causing delays to the users.

So to fix it, we have to take a two way approach.

Increase the road capacity by
1. building flyovers
2. Add more lanes to the existing roads
3. Ensure that roads are smooth and remain that way throughout the year.

Decrease the demand by
1. encouraging, use of public transport (make the car parking charges so high that it discourages people to use cars for petty things and use that money to build world class public transport systems)
2. encourage, car pooling (tax the people (by tolls) who's car occupancy is 1) levy huge taxes of private cars entering certain areas (like they do in london)

Bangalore needs good and effective public transport systems - A Metro would certainly help. Also, people can be encouraged to use the public transport buses by completely revamping them and increasing their frequencies and route coverage to ensure that people don't get turned off by the idea of travelling in those buses.

Even roads need to be widened and flyovers built at key places to ensure smooth flow of traffic without interruptions like traffic signals.

Also, new companies coming up should be encouraged to spread across the city. Currently, lots of companies have come up on few key roads and they have lots of employees who prefer taking the car because either there is no public transport or its not attractive enough..

And yes, car pooling should be certainly encouraged..that would help matters a bit, but unless radical changes are made, it would be difficult to improve the current situation

Ask all the IT giants to vacate Bangalore and move on to a better place. That solves problem for them and you.

Educate the people, make the rickshaw drivers and other labour drivers aware of the raffic rules!!!!!!

Pick up multiple people from your residence or around (ppl that you know!) and save trips by dropping off everyone along the way, closest to where they have to get to.

LET US EXCHANGE MUMBAI AND BANGALORE TRAFFIC

Sale of private vechicles shall be stopped and government vechicles (local buses) should be increased. Construction of flyovers is also a remedy to the traffic.

Make all buses & auto rickshaws run only on CNG , it will not only reduce traffic congestion but the pollution in the city also.
