How do you say these phrases in Hindi? |
I'm going to India on vacation in a month, and I'd like to learn a few simple phrases. Do you know how to say hello, thank you, how much does this cost and it's too expensive? And what do I say if I want to order a beer? |

I know it’s hard to learn languages straight out of a textbook or dictionary, so I thought I’d put together a short video saying these words. This way you could hear it and practice it!

For hello, you might just want to say "hello". or in hindi "namaste",
Thankyou - Dhanyavaadh ('dhan' as in 'thus'
'ya' as in 'a'
'vaadh')
how much does this cost - 'iska(this) bhaav(cost) kithna(how much) hai?'
or - 'iska dhaam kitna hai?'
it's too expensive - 'yeh (pronounce as 'a') tho bahuth(too much) mehanga(costly) hai'
i want a bottle of beer - i hope you would be ordering it in a restaurant/bar and not a local wine shop. in that case you can talk english and they surely would u'stand.
in hindi it is " mujhe (i) ek (one) bothal (bottle) beer( beer) chaahiyea (want)"
mujhe ek bothal beer chahiyea
i hope this helps...have a great time in india |

Hi
Nice to know that you want to learn the local language.
Do you understand Hindi to any little extent?
I am asking this question because - apart from wanting to know how in Hindi can you exchange greetings like 'hello' and 'thank you' - you want to know 'how much does this cost' and 'it's too expensive'
For you to use the last two expressions in Hindi - I am sure you know, you should know a little more Hindi. Let us say - you ask 'Iska daam kitna hain?' (How much does this cost?) - since you ask in Hindi - the answer immediately will be in Hindi, like 'do sau rupiah' or 'char sau bis'. Do you understand Hindi numbers for money ?
Also for you to say the next one 'bahut mehanga hain' (Very expensive) you should really know the quoted price is really too high?
Do not expect all the markets in India or Delhi - to see vendors with calculators to type in the numbers for you :-)
If you expect them to give you the price in English (which many vendors can) - you gave the secret away that you are new there - hahaha
So learn a little more of Hindi numbers and money.
hello = namaste
'namaste' or 'namaskar' will do as a greeting like hello, though most of the times, a hello will also do. 'hello' is also widely used and accepted greeting locally.
thank you = dhanyawad
but like hello - 'thank you' is also a widely used and accepted expression locally. |
