How long is a visa to india valid for?

I am a US citizen planning to make a trip to India in the next few months. I'd like to know how long a visa is valid for i.e 5 years or 3 mos. by example, so I know when to apply. Wether it's more appropriate to apply just before making the trip or fine to do so a few months in advance.

Thanks

It is nice people are trying to help you by answering....I am sorry to say that their information is not accurate. A Tourist Visa to India can be up to 10years for an American citizen...and there is no greater formality for applying for that one than just applying for a 3month or 6month or 1year or 5year. ...and it is a multiple entry, as well....meaning that you could either leave India and come back as often or scarce as you like within those 10years...many people who visit India tend to return. If you plan to stay there and spend a deal of time then you can do that as well....in any one location so long as you register with the local intelligence officer (L.I.U.) in the city you wish to stay....if, however you wish to stay over 180days and still wish to be a traveler...going here and there randomly without a base and holding a 10year visa then you will need to leave the country...usually Nepal and then come back... which a lot of people do and is a breeze and a minimal cost of about 30U.S. dollars. If you wish to stay in one place and you are registered then you do not need to leave or come back at all if you don't want to..you can stay either as long as your visa and/or passport is valid. If you start with just a 1year visa then you can stay the whole year without coming and going. By the way Indian visas are a bit different in one respect..They start on the day you receive them.and NOT the day you enter the country..so, time wisely...if you get it now and are not going till July then you have lost a month. Last but not least...The Indian Embassy is known to be quite efficient...and even very helpful. I am American and not of Indian heritage and have used their services quite often. Same day service with great service as well..C'mon. the Indians are famous for their service! Dedication, generosity and respect with their assistance. Please enjoy your trip! _/\_

a Tourist Visa lasts for 6 months....we get ours a month or so before we travel to India to allow time for it to reach us.....because if it doesn't arrive on time - you can not enter India...they are VERY strict at the airport.

It depends on the purpose of your visit and accordingly there is a time period for your visa..
it is advised to prepare well in advance and get everything sorted before you actually visit India..

Nonimmigrant Visas
General Information

A nonimmigrant visa is most frequently a tourist, business, student, or specialty worker visa that will permit the applicant to stay for a particular period of time in the United States to accomplish a specific purpose, such as visiting, studying, or working in a specialty job.

Visa Validity
A visa's validity is the period during which the traveler may use the visas to apply for admission to the U.S. It does not indicate the length of time the visitor may stay. An officer of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) authorizes the traveler's admission to the United States and determines the period of authorized stay.

Applicants should be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry to the United States. At the port of entry, an inspector may deny admission to the holder of a valid visa if the traveler's activities do not appear to be compatible with the specified visa category.

A standard tourist Indian visa is usually valid for 180 days and allows multiple entry. Business visas can last 2-5 years depending on the type. It is advisable to purchase your visa a few months in advance to allow for any delays. The Indian embassy is not known for efficiency.
