One day is more than enough. In fact it takes less than half day the other half you can use for seeing the nearby red fort.

Sure One day is more than enough. Taj Mahal gives the impression of being a big structure whereas actually it is not.
There are other places that you can see though like Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Pearl Mosque etc
You could keep sometime for shopping too. Agra is famous for an Indian Sweet called ' Petha '.You could pick up Chess sets made of Marble and Onyx. Ornamental plates with inlaid work etc.
Agra is also famous for Leather goods.
Swapan, The Dream
Just to see once it takes about 15 minutes.
To enjoy and enjoy even 100 years are not enough.

Yes, make it a day trip from Delhi. Get a car plus driver to take you there. Spend some time walk around and maybe take a small picnic/snacks, that way you won't have to go looking for a clean/decent lunch place. We spent a day there without realizing it. I do regret not seeing it by moonlight, it's supposed to be magical. Come back by day's end and make sure you take pictures. Just be careful outside the entrance; Agra is known for its pickpockets even more so than Delhi.
