There are countless Indian titles (rather surnames to be exact). So it is not possible to give an exact figure.
Bishts belong to the Hindu religion.
Bisht refers to the title of Rajputs in Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand. Bisht was a title given by Kumaon and Garhwal Kings to nobles. It has come from the word Visishist, a Sanskrit word that means distinguished. Bishts are also in Himachal Pradesh.
Bisht in Uttarakhand are - Rawal, Parihaar, Panwar etc. Usually the families know their ancestory and they mention from which larger family they come from like Parihaar Bisht or Rawal Bisht etc. is mentioned.
Bisht title became synonymous with nobility and elitism and this led to its use by non Rajputs.
Some of the Bisht's known in Uttrakhand are Brahmins as well. A variation of "Bisht" last name is "Bist". These are mostly Kumaoni Rajputs.
Bisht originated as an occupational title. It was given to nobles who were courtiers to the kings. They possesed grants of lands (Jagirs) from the kings and in turn collected taxes from the tillers. This practice continued over centuries and was abolished by the British when they enforced land reforms in the hills and as a result the land ownership went to the tiller.
Mostly Rajputs possessed this title and passed this to their generations. Being a title of status it became preferable in use, however many families still remember their original surnames.
