Well, I know this sounds incredible, but India actually has 2000 dialects!!! See wikipedia: At least 30 different languages and around 2000 dialects have been identified. The Constitution of India has stipulated the usage of Hindi and English to be the two languages of official communication for the national government. Additionally, it contains a list of 22 scheduled languages.
And the major languages are:
1. Assamese (official language of Assam)
2. Bengali (official language of Tripura and West Bengal)
3. Bihari (official language of Bihar and Jharkhand)
4. Bhojpuri (official language of Bihar)
5. Bodo (official language of Assam)
6. English (official language of Nagaland)
