How much would a saree or salwaa kamzee cost in India?

I'm totally getting excited, even though nothing is 100% decided or booked yet! I am going to be volunteering in a remote village for 10 weeks or so and will want to fit in with the other women and the indian clothes are so beautiful. So i'd like to wear Indian clothes whilst i am there for at least some of the time (when im not hoiking my backpack about). Will they cost much?

I also really want to walk through customs wearing one when my parents pick me up!!

you'll get your things even without burning big holes in your pocket, no worries!..well, quality does vary with the price..but that's nothing to worry about either!..so whatever your budget is, you'll find something for yourself!...salwar kameez is fine..but when it's about saree or sari,
i should warn you that wearing it won't be that easy for you since you haven't ever!...and well, customs is never a problem!

better if you get local help!..if you don't know anybody, you can ask me, wherever you're from and whatever village you'd go to, i guess i can find you some local help there!..all the best!

the answer from Soldiero is wrong & totally untrue...when we go to India the men have total respect for people with whiter skin...they are lovely people there!

you could have a sari made for less than 10 pounds in India...& if you shop around...even cheaper. i bought some lovely leather, sparkly sandals for 2pounds....everything is cheaper in India & it's lovely workmanship & quality.

Hi, When I went to India I got a whole outfit, a pink suit with shoes and a ring to match and I think the lot cost about £30. Its an amazing experience, you sit there and they bring out such beautiful fabrics and so many colours and patterns its hard to chose! Luckily I was able to send mine home or it would have got ruined in my back pack.
Did not wear mine through customs but cooked a curry for the girls and wore it when they came round was a right laugh!

A decent Sari would cost anywhrere from 400-500 Rupees (10-15 USD) onwards. I'm assuming you are going to buy them in India. Salwar kameez costs Rupees 200 ( 5$ ) onwards.

If you are thinking of buying those in your country never go buy them at the Indian stores in malls, they literally rob you! And they do not have any variety , they mostly keep festive clothes which are of no use for ur purpose.

Better buy the when you reach India. Any city will have hundreds of clothes shops where you can buy these.
Looking at foreigners the shopkeepers will try to sell you costly ones, but do not buy anything too decorative.

As you will are going to go for volunteering work, choose something appropriate. I would strongly suggest not to wear sari. Its very inconvinient, hard to wear and manage.
I'm a indian woman in my thirties, have been married and have kids , but even I have worn it hardly 10-15 times.. that to during my own wedding and a few others :)

As i said sari tho looks beautiful its not at all a practical thing to wear! Just buy one to take a picture if you wish but not for working.

Salwar kameez is nice and comfortable. Easy to wear without anybody's help and maintain.

Get to know what the weather is .. if you are going anywhere in southern side of India, weather will be hot/humid (except for Dec/Jan). So go for 100% cotton wear and loose fitting clothes to be comfortable.

Good luck!
