My experience as a visitor is:
As long as you and your appearance don't offend or cry tourist too loudly it is quite safe. But I would never recommend to walk all by yourself if you don't know the area very well.
Traveling mostly on business I prefer to stay as close to the places I will go as possible. This reduces hassle and being late due to unforeseen traffic hazards.

I dont much about Delhi....i have never been there. But as far as i have read abt Delhi... its not so wise for a woman to be on her own in Delhi.... Maximum rape happens in the "INDIAN CAPITAL"... DELHI. Which we all Indians have to ashamed of.... coz we r unable to stop this. I dont know how safe is it for men.
