How safe is Bombay, India?
My brother is about to travel to India and I would like to know if he should be aware of anything in particular.
Bombay is safe in the day but I don't walk around at night. Beggars will follow tourists around asking for money at all the tourist places. If you give some out - you will attract a mob of beggars. Best advice is to keep small bills and change in one pocket and your wallet in another. If you have a need to 'tip' someone - pull the money out of your 'small change' pocket so they do not see your wad of larger bills. Before you leave the hotel - always have a wad of 10 rupee notes ($.25) in a handy pocket to tip - pay beggars etc. Leave your real money safe in your wallet in your front pocket.

Safe place in general and nothing to be really worried about. Ask him not to indulge in quarrels with local people.

My two 20 something daughters just returned from Bombay. They had a fantastic time and felt safe. Their advice is to be alert, head up and walk with purpose. One day they decided to rent a limo: best money they spent, saw many things and save a lot of time.

Its a very safe city... women work late and travel home in public transportation system...I know a lot of women who travel at night from workplace to home and its absolutely safe......
Any big cities have bad guys ....but the percentage is very low...mainly because of population.. Delhi is much more unsafe than Mumbai...

Bombay is a very good city.
people are pretty co-operative.Just tell him to keep his belongings safely while moving around. There are a lot of beggars who do not give up even when u refuse them, those ******* fools follow tourists around for almost a kilometre.keep that in mind. The public transport is reliable once you know where you're going.Taxi drivers rarely tend to taking around a bogus journey of the city.
Better, take tourist taxis from the hotel where he is staying.

I travelled the whole country, and Bombay appeared one of the safest places. But then, one should never be too relaxed and careless in India...

Bombay is nothing different from any city in the world. It is as safe/ unsafe as Washington DC. I remember people warning me about not walking into certain localities in DC, being beware of getting mugged. At least in Mumbai, people would not kill you for your shoes.
100 is the police number. Most cell phones allow you to dial 100 (or 112 emergency numbers) even when they are locked. He would be safe till the time he doesn't walk into trouble. As long as he is not diving deep into the murky waters, he is fairly safe. It can be handy if you know a local person who can come to your rescue in sticky situations. People in Mumabai are fairly friendly, they can really go out of their way to help you out.
