I did myself (in the South though).

Nevertheless, I don't think India is very safe country where to go traveling alone, if you are a woman.

But if you stay on the tourist/backpacker route, I think you won't have any particular problem.

It may sound stupid, but the following simple advices may help in having a nice trip: use common sense, dress properly, do not go around at night alone.

Read something about India and its habits before leaving.

Wish you a great holiday :-)

If u are smart girl like me India is as safe as any other place!
Dont talk to strangers. Dont take food from them! And always move with the crowds.

Then no need to worry abt anything! Bware of autodrives in metros like Blore Chennai Delhi, if given a change they can squeeze money out of u!

Certain parts of every country in the world can be dangerous, so why is the question about india? I agree that india is a bit more dangerous. However girls now a days should learn self defence cuz its required everywhere.
I would recomend taking a guy along with you when you go somewhere.

If you are not behaving in provocative manner, India is absolutely safe. We indians are known for our respect to guests and ladies.
take my word for that.

It's not safe for any stranger to travel safe in India, or any place on earth these days alone or otherwise...

... i traveled with a bunch of university friends and really enjoyed.. i guess maybe because we have friends... but then most of the places reminded me of places i have lived and visited here.. ohio... new york.. chicago... alabama.. so.. i guess its pretty much the same thing everywhere.. you just have to be..smart. :)

Just want to add on to other good suggestions. If you are absolutely sure you want to come by yourself then don't miss out on the chance to come just because you don't have a travel companion. It isn't as safe as some places but it isn't horrible either. Wear conservative clothing (don't wear shorts). If possible try to see if there is anyone staying at a hostel that you can hook up w/ and see sites together (you might meet someone at mumbai or delhi/agra). If anyway tries anything inappropriate yell at them and slap them. Make sure someone knows where you are every step of your jorney and check in w/ them at a cerain time (even if it is an overseas call each night). I think the bigger metros are a little safer just because there are usually more white people and maybe the guys are a little less desperate ;-)

girls are safe. you have mentioned many cities. thousands of girls reside in hostel in all those cities alone. u visit pune or delhi and see. so no question of danger even in villages of india are very safe. people may be poor or illiterate there but are curteous and will treat you like guest. so no need to worry but remember like every country of the world some miscreants are here too. but that is same in USA or UK too.

Avin
actually in india, among few of males thinks that womens r only for sex. and becoz of that parents r not allowing girls to become self defenssive, they always depend upon their parents or grown up brother, under this they r not safe, moreever our judial system is so curruopt n slow,if something goes wrong they cant get justice.

dialovesu
well it is not safe anywere in the world!! id say enjoy ur life but travel in groups at nite!!! be street smart!!! n dont mess with usless creeps!!! no matter waht they say just ignore!!!

sunlightsublime
it is most unsafe in mumbai and delhi. it is moderate in other pklaces. they are safest in darjeeling. the girls need to be fully mentally and physcially alert and equipped and self confident. the molestors are cowards and when they face well deserved retaliation, they melt away.

All the places U mensioned should be safe.
Onlly thing is girl/girls should take necessary precautions.like getting proper information, being more cautious, keep some papper spray incase, avoid going out at late nights alone try to be in crowded place then empty place/buses/trains.

Otherwise every place is unsafe not only for girls, for guys also.
Have safe & wonderfull journey.

Yes it is absolutely safe for the girls to travel in India by themselves provided they follow certain things. 1. Their dresses should be decent means the body part should be covered. Do not wear provoking dresses. 2. They should avoid talking to strangers. If they want any information for the place to go, it is always better to ask any lady who is decent in looks and can talk in a language which you understand. Confirm about the information given by that lady by talking to another lady so that you are sure about the info. It is always better to be sure about the info from an authentic source before you visit the place. 3. Behave properly in a public place so that you do not attract people unnecessarily. 4. Do not visit the places about you do not know. Certain place in all the cities are not good for the gentleman and ladies to visit at certain point of time of the day. Avoid such incidences.
If you follow certain norms then it is absolutely safe to travel in India.

People with good dress sense are mostly always safe.

It's ok to dress a certain way in the bigger cities, but for the lesser regions of the country it's just softporn.

it was never safe for girls in india...indian guys r so desperate...

A lot of girls travel by themselves and these are the most popular destinations. Plan everything well, esp train/air and hotel bookings. Use a good travel guide book. Take the usual precautions.

Generally avoidable. Day time travel is okay but night time ought to be avoided as far as possible, and definitely so in North India, Mumbai and Pune may be okay but there have been recent untoward incidents. If travelling alone by long distance train preferably book the ladies compartment and avoid overnight journeys alone.
