I traveled to India SOLO three times in my 20's. (1994, 1995, 1996)
I never got mugged, pick pocketed, or anything else. I was in rough parts of Mumbai (Then Bombay in 1994), all over Delhi, through the South of India, and several points in between.
Granted that was several years ago, but India is still India. It is a fantastic country with wonderful people. Be smart, and always look like you know where you are going.
I look at other tourists (I am in Costa Rica right now), and I can see that they are just begging for trouble. They walk around with a giant backpack with a cow eyed look on their face, looking at maps and constantly trying to figure out where they are, where they are going, and how they will get there. They make themselves perfect targets.
I travel light, dress low key in general (Except for my watch, that's kind of flashy), and always walk with purpose, even when I am lost. I do not walk to the end of a street, look around in wide eyed wonder, and then walk back in the direction that I came from. That is just asking for trouble in any city. (Even in the US)
All that said, make some friends in India online before you go. It will be easy to find several people that are willing to show you around before you even arrive. Having a local guide means never having to wonder where you are.
Also, if you do get lost, jump into a taxi or rickshaw and tell them to take you to a landmark that you are familiar with. It might be two blocks away, and might be 50. It doesn't matter, it will help you avoid that, "Where the Heck am I?" look on your face. |

Well, I'm not sure. But I went to Bali, Indonesia about a month after the bombing and I was perfectly safe. I doubt all this bombing will end any time soon, so I say just go. |
