I traveled to India SOLO three times in my 20's. (1994, 1995, 1996)

I never got mugged, pick pocketed, or anything else. I was in rough parts of Mumbai (Then Bombay in 1994), all over Delhi, through the South of India, and several points in between.

Granted that was several years ago, but India is still India. It is a fantastic country with wonderful people. Be smart, and always look like you know where you are going.

I look at other tourists (I am in Costa Rica right now), and I can see that they are just begging for trouble. They walk around with a giant backpack with a cow eyed look on their face, looking at maps and constantly trying to figure out where they are, where they are going, and how they will get there. They make themselves perfect targets.

I travel light, dress low key in general (Except for my watch, that's kind of flashy), and always walk with purpose, even when I am lost. I do not walk to the end of a street, look around in wide eyed wonder, and then walk back in the direction that I came from. That is just asking for trouble in any city. (Even in the US)

All that said, make some friends in India online before you go. It will be easy to find several people that are willing to show you around before you even arrive. Having a local guide means never having to wonder where you are.

Also, if you do get lost, jump into a taxi or rickshaw and tell them to take you to a landmark that you are familiar with. It might be two blocks away, and might be 50. It doesn't matter, it will help you avoid that, "Where the Heck am I?" look on your face.

That's just the very question that the cowards ~ I mean terrorists want you to ask the free world in order to plant the seeds of fear into the free thinking individuals heads. DON'T STAND FOR IT !
When your over there demand from the authorities that they show you how they are improving their combatting the situation of fear mongering .

im really not sure about this answer but i wish i knew!
im traveling to goa on wed 10th of december and stopping at mumbai for 6 hours until we then go onto goa. im going with my partner and son and find all this very scary. my parents are already in goa and phone nearly every day to say that things are fine there, but they are planning on lots of trips to the north of india which im told are the places we should be avoiding. we had planned to visit the taj amongst lots of other places. i just hope that we will be safe and all the other people in india. but as i said we will still be going as every phone call to embassy's and the home office and the travel company all have said things are going ahead as normal so we will not be postponing our trip.

Well, I'm not sure. But I went to Bali, Indonesia about a month after the bombing and I was perfectly safe. I doubt all this bombing will end any time soon, so I say just go.

Dangers and accidents may happen anytime anywhere. I can't say if it's safe to go there on January

In spite of impressions from terrorist's attack in Mumbai, it is logical to suppose that Indian officials will do their best to increase security level.
So trip depends from your subjective decision.
