Don't worry..... India is not so backward!!!

First of all, don't know which place/s you are going to. India is so diverse, you will find vast differences in language, culture, etc.

You really don't need a laptop as most places have cybercafes where you can check mail. If you need it for other work then you can bring it down. Take care of it though and remember that here in India the voltage is 230 volts.

India has lots to offer so you really don't need to worry much about what you want to bring with you. If want to bring something as a wedding gift, it's your choice entirely as bringing something from your own country would be a nice gesture.

Regards, food and drink, yes, do watch out that you drink only bottled water in most places. Mosquito repellent is available in most pharmacies / drugstores across the country.

If you are thinking of taking a trip to Goa (on the west coast of India) and you need more info about this place, then contact me.....

my friend says bring your own water, lots of beef jerky, and something to block the overwhelming spice smells you will have in all cars, elevators, etc.

I'd just say watch out for the water... use local computer stuff so you do not have to lug your laptop... and some good walking shoes

I went to a Sikh wedding in August 07 in Delhi - had to wear appropriate clothing so if it's a formal wedding, be sure you know what's expected (including head covering).
Laptop is good to have in some situation - but non-essential and quite a weight aside from risk of theft.
My prep involved researching/estimating travel costs in India, allocating minimum 2000 Rs/- per night accommodation budget (but some rooms I paid 4500 - others as low as 600.

Food is modest - expect to pay about 500 R/- for a really good feed (but again, as cheap as 50).
Only drink bottle pani (water) and be sure seal not cracked - as they do re-bottle water from raintanks or even run-off from mossy banks etc - avoid all salads as they are washed in water and will rapidly sicken you - raw onion (if you cut it open yourself) is fine with meals - same with all closed fuits such as orange, banana, etc - nuts are great - it's all about avoiding gut parasites from filthy hands and filthy food prep benches.

Cooked Indian food - fantastic - I was there a month never got sick except for the flu i brought from UK en route to Australia.

I went in via Mumbai, down to Pune which has a wonderful Osho commune/ashram there (a multiversity they call it) open to visitors or for enrolment - I went on to Kolkata, then North to Siliguri, Darjeeling, Gangtok (in Sikkim) then back to Baghdogra (military) airport to fly into Delhi where I went to the Sikh wedding - I then went out via Jaipur for 2 days, on to Jodhpur for a week - fantastic everywhere I went especially Rajasthan (Jodhpur) and Sikkim (Gangtok) but latter needs a (free) permit to be obtained (in Siliguri). It's in the Himalayas.

I left Jodhpur via train to Mumbai (1600 Rs/- 2AC class) and flew out from there to Sydney.

If I had the journey again - I'd want to go north via Dharmasala and overland thru the high mountain passes via Manali into Leh (Kashmir). - Good Luck and be safe

don't take your laptop to india and if you do plan on taking it make sure you have the right outlet for the charger as in india htey have different outlet system. you won't find much of wireless service in some areas of india depending on where you are staying so make sure you call your cousins in india ahed of time to inquire about wireless internet otherwise, it would be deadweight loss for you. one thing you can take to india is plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellent trust me you'll need it. one more thing don't carry your laptop in public places much because you'll definetly get mugged if you are not careful.
enjoy the wedding and best of luck

get a huge bottle of whisky and drink a shot every morning. no kidding... whisky is killer for bacteria. also remember not to take tab water into your mouth, use bottled water for tooth brushing. You may also want to stay away from monkeys, they try to take away everything they can.But you can get close to cows as much as you want, they're like pets. Watch your money and password everywhere even in hotel room. I don't know about wireless but as far as i experienced, internet cafes are all around even if internet is a bit slow. North of india is so beautiful but people are less friendly than south i think. I would suggest you not to take any road trip, it took as more than 6 hours to travel 250 km (155 miles), anyway if you want to take a road trip, better get a jeep and stay away from Ambassodor car brand. Last and most important, negotiate for everything with a bit humor and calm. I got at least 60% discount for most of the things, if you have time, you can get even more.
