Hi,
The truth is that there is no short cut for learning "Tamil" specially for a North Indian. One will take time to learn and can start with the small tamil words what "Binny" mentioned, which is really useful, but one can always use English which almost everyone in Chennai understand.
Also learn tamil numbers upto 10, trust me they are real easy and useful in day to day life.
Good Luck!! |

thanni - paani
paal - duudh
nan (place name) poganum, evlo? - muje (place name) jana hai, kithne?
eppadi - how
engae- where
eppo - when
enaku - for me
avarku/avangaluku - for them

You can pick up the colloquial spoken language in the market or through servants within a short time.
Also consider taking short term tuitions from the Tamil teacher of a nearby school.
For a more academic course, there are several reknown Tamil institutes, one I think is somewhere near Shollinganallur. |

You can learn Tamil by speaking with a Tamil knowing friend. First try to collect words to your vocabulary . Shed your shyness to use the words. Practice makes you perfect in short time. To learn reading and writing will take time. |

If you know Tamil and Hindi you can manage all through out in india. Try to befriend a Tamil guy or gal. Try to talk them in Tamil even if you are wrong. Thats the only way. No books will do the magic. Only your practice. |
