Nick

I'd like a spiritual journey in India, where should I go?

I want to spend a month in the mountains of India (August/September)...

Preferably in a temple where I could work, live, and meditate with locals.

I've never been before, but I feel like it is something I need to do.

Where should I go?

Any place on the Himalayas like the Rishikesh, Gangotri, Badrinath will be exciting.

Dharamshala : meditate with the Tibetan Buddhist monks

Uttarakhand : Go on a pilgrimage of the 4 most sacred spots: Kedarnath Badrinath Gangotri and Yamunotri

Haridwar and Rishikesh on the banks of the holy Ganga

Amritsar: the Golden temple, holiest Sikh shrine

Ajmer : worship at the holy Muslim dargah

Having enjoyed the spiritual places of India, I would say that my suggestion would be:

(a) Start with Haridwar/Rishikesh in Uttaranchal. These are sacred places in the Mountains where pilgrims roam about as you meditate along the Ganges. You hear the temple bells, see the daily worshipping along the rivers with fire holders in the dusk. Awesome.

(b) Staying on in the same state (I.E. Uttaranchal) go to Kedar Nath temple. This is a very ancient place where pigrims throng only in the summer months, as winter makes it impassable. As BBC TV once put it: "This place seems to measure time in Geological ages, not in years!"

(c) Madhya Pradesh and go to Onkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar temples. Awesome pilgrimage places, with ancient temples. The river Narmada river can also be seen nearby and these temples with the Narmada are supposed to expiate all sins. At every turn, you seem to come to new temples and all seem to have a story associated with it.

(d) In the South, the temple at Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam is equally awesome. It is very well renowned and is composed of seven hills where the religion is all you hear about. But be ready for long lines and waiting.

(e) Last but not the least, the Puri temple at Puri and the Dwarkadheesh Temple at Gujarat are equally famed. Both are very holy places, have near-sea location and are basically located in temple towns, where you can actually meditate with locals and take in the charm of the towns.

These are suggestions, and I am sure there are many more places that will fullfill what you are looking for.

Most famous pilgrimage in India is Vaishno Devi Temple Katra,Jammu Kashmir and Amarnath Yatra.
You can also visit Sikkim, there are many buddhist monasteries.I think it will prove to be the best spritual journey in India.

Haridwar – the point at which the holy river Ganga leaves the mighty Himalayas to enter the plains. And gateway it is, since it is via Haridwar that one reaches the Char Dham, as well as the holy Rishikesh. If you have a spiritual bent of mind, you cannot afford to miss the ethereal lamp-lighting ceremony on the river at Har-ki-pauri at dusk!

Varanasi should top your itinerary – located on the bank of the Ganga again it is the oldest surviving city in the world and is famous for its holy ghats and ancient temples. Nearby, on the Yamuna lies Mathura and Vrindavan – revered as Lord Krishna’s transcendental abode even today!

On your trip to Rajasthan, do drop by at Ajmer for a peek at the holy Pushkar Lake and the 500 temples, especially the rare Brahma Temple. Considered one of the holiest of Hindu sites, Ajmer is also home to the fabled Moinuuddin Chisti Dargah.

Turn southward and you’ll have to stop at Pondicherry and its Sri Aurobindo Ashram with the utopian township of Auroville. Founded in 1926 by the famous freedom fighter, philosopher, and sage, Sri Aurobindo, the ashram is a global centre for Yoga and rational thought!

Of course, no trip to India is complete without a visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and the Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh.

don't go to varanasi!! it's a hindu pilgrimage place near a buddhist pigrimage place (sarnath) very auspicious place to die (really!) but hygiene is miserable, i got very very ill there!!

Sandile M
You need to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour and you will find out that you don't need to go all the way to India for a spiritual journey. Wherever you are can be transformed into an exciting and fulfiling spiritual encounter with God. Then you will know you have found a great spiritual journey ever!

Try it and you will know I am right!
