Go to Mizoram (23rd state of India) in the far east of India (on the other side of Bangladesh, bordering Burma)(capital: Aizwal). Loads of information on web if you just key in Mizoram. The people are beautiful, more like orientals and it's a part of India that nobody goes to, everybody goes to Agra and Goa!

It actually depends on what are your interests. If you like beaches, Goa or Kerela are the best, If you interested in History, Cultures, Ancient Architecture - Go to Rajesthan- Agra. If you looking for wild-lifes..... Madhya Pradesh, and Gir in Gujarat got nice wild life..... and if you looking for some nice fast city-break - Look no further then Mumbai/Delhi/Pune/Banglore where u find some good Pubs and Clubs. May be you cud set aside few more months and go for all..! :D Have a nice time Bro.!

Places will still be open although it is out of the main tourist season (November-March) and it will be hot & humid but not raining.
The advantage is that hotel rates should come down so you could splash out and stay somewhere special. I would recommend the Leela Palace in Cavalossim or the Taj Exotica in Varca.
Both are in South Goa which is quieter than the North, both are actually on the same stretch of 20km beach which is lovely.

It's only a short walk from the beach but is set back in a private space, it is a guesthouse with very good service and only about 4 rooms, all immaculately designed in Goa style with balconies etc. There is no pool but the place is gorgeous, wiht its own driver and chef and staff that are wonderful, they will not pester you but will be on hand for your every need. A British couple own the villa, he was educated in India, she moved from the UK after falling in love with Goa. The price seems expensive in India but for UK prices it's amazing. I think it was probably the best holiday I had there. There is even a reiki healer and meditation sessions in the private garden if you're into that type of thing. they even called one of their friends who has beach shacks up the coast in a very quiet area and got their driver to take us there for a night, high on stilts overlooking the sea, for just a few pounds, we really were treated like royalty and friends. I have passed on a recomendation to lots of people and it would def be my first choice. It's not some awful tourist resort, it's for someone who likes their holidays to be a little more 'independent'. Please don't get a package, you'll end up in some awful block with a shared pool full of people wanting cheap booze, although in comparison Goa is not that bad as far as package hell goes. For cheap flights try www.charterflights.co.uk for as little as Â£99 return some weeks!! Not sure if April might be a little late though, beware they are CHARTER flights, but if you grit your teeth for 8 hours and sit with the rabble it might be worth it for the price - enjoy!! Am envious...

You're pushing it a bit with April, the best weather is up to end of March really, before it starts to get sticky and wet, for the oncoming monsson, but you might get away with early - mid April and it might be quieter and cheaper.

P.S. if you get a choice of rooms at Vila Tiva go with the 'Taj' it's the best one, GREAT bed! and private balcony.

Goa would be the good option. April would be a good time to visit Goa. If you want some happening beaches like parties, flee markets then stay at North Goa.
Or if you just want a quiet holiday then South Goa is the best. You will have absolute privacy.

best of luck buddy, have fun and make your trip memorable for yourself and for your GF too. Goa now a days is a tourist spot through out the year. Season end in March means, you will get all the things at a very good discount. try out www.goatourism.org for package tours and hotels. but my suggestion is not to stay with Goa Tourism Hotels. their plus point is their location rite at the beaches but service and others make them horrible.

try www.majordabeachresort.com -- this one is my favourite bcos of the quality of food and beach. being a 5 star beach resort - the rates are on the higher side.

Go to Baga Calangute Vagator Arambol Anjuna areas, where you will still find some activity in April.
All these beaches are in North Goa.

I have been to Goa a few times, I love all of India but Goa is a bit different as it is a tourist resort more than 'real' India, but good for a week of relaxation after backpacking about. Ihave noticed however that it is getting more and more commercial and Westerners are buying up new apartment blocks and although it will never be anything as bad as some awful Spanish resort, it is changing. there are still the hundreds of German hippies on scooters and the like, but due to a big drugs crack down, it's not the hippy druggie place it used to be, this is now mingled with charter flights and package tours. Although i still love it, the beaches, the markets, the backwaters, the temples, and the Portugese feel to Goa, it is slowly being taken over sadly by people who simply want to profit from tourism. It depends what you want, but maybe consider flying to Trivandrum in South India, Kerela, as an alternative. You still get the beaches, and the temples, and the backwaters and maybe you could try ayurvedik (sp?) treatments which are great, it might be a little bit more expensive to fly to and the accommodation may be a little more but if you want something more unspoilt and a little more exclusive it may be your thing. Try Alistair Sawday's website or publication for the most exclusive, unusual, interesting, yet not always that expensive, accommodation options. enjoy, I am sure you will love the India and like me want to go back every year!

I went in December, peak time busy and expensive but still great, a friend went at the end of March and he said it was the end of the season so quieter but could feel the weather changing and the monsoon changes just about round the corner and wouldnt' like to have left it later than that to go, I think end March to early April is the last time to go really unless you want more rain and sticky feel.

we went to Goa in April and stayed at the Cidade de goa hotel in vainguinim beach goa had a fantastic time hotel was lovely and so was the staff,hotel on a beautiful beach , not far from panjim i would recommend it and would love to return one day make sure you visit appora night market and calangutte ...hope this helps and have a wonderful time where ever you end up :)
forgot to say every thing was open in April ,hotel as its own jewellers and a couple of other shops about 5 different restaurants and gym and all sorts of different massages on offer :)

I went for 3 weeks the year before last, from mid-April to the start of May. We went to Goa in the second half of our 3 weeks and the beach was just right. Not too many people at all and everywhere was open - prices were low. In fact I'd recommend that mid-April to the start of May is probably one of the best times in the year to go to Goa.

Depends what you are looking for, Goa is not dead but not roudy, still beatifull and food delicious and cheap, not many tourists around at that time. I went for my 30th, it felt like a local, alot of indian tourists from other parts of the country, head for calangute beach and bagga, you can swim with dolphins and paraglide and various other, even get wed!!! Enjoy yourself!!!

April is ok in Goa, unless you are unlucky. The monsoon tends to hit about the middle of May, but when I was last in India ( May 07) the locals told me the monsoon is increasingly unpredictable. So there you go..

As to your budget. if you've not been to India before you won't believe the prices! Taxis in Goa will wait outside the bar for you for about 70p an hour!

Do you want a holiday or an experience of a lifetime? The real beauty of India isnt just about commericial beach based places; read up on the 'golden triangle' and see what you think. Agra is buzzing and I'm fortunate enough to have visited a few of the wonders of the world and nothing beats the beauty and the magnificence of Taj Mahal. I know that sounds a typical response, but it takes your breath away. Go round the back on the river, see the kids play and hear the rickshaws constant beep at each other. I could go on and on and on but trust me, you would never regret the trip (but do take diarrohea treatment).

Wicked beaches would have to be Goa. Though Varkala (Kerala - South India) and Pondicherry (Chennai, South East coast) beaches are also beautiful. In Varkala, try the Taj for accomodation and in Pondicherry you might like Auroville. If in South India, check out the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary (easy drive time from Varkala) and stay at a coffee plantation (Shalimar Spice Garden www.anantara.in/shalimar.htm is one that comes to mind). Though there is no beach in Thekkady, Nature are her best is another way to enjoy a holiday.
