If you do not have heavy luggage, there are buses going to Guindy. Tkae a bus and ask for IIT stopping.
If you are having luggage, better engage a prepaid taxi/auto and reach your destination.

Since you are coming by train.

1. Take the Flying Train from Central Railway Station and Reach Kasturibha Nagar MRT Station.
2. If you are reaching Egmore, then take another train to reach Park Station then follow 1.
From here it is hardly half a kilometer.
You can walk / talk a auto from Kasturibha Nagar Railway Station to reach IIT.

Cheaper and faster mode: Then its gonna be Train.
There is a suburban station called "Park Town station" bang opposite to Chennai-Central station. Get to the 4th platform of the station (to catch the MRTS train) and board a train and alight at "Kasthuribai Nagar station". This would be the 9th station from "Park Town".

Jus come out of station and walk west-wards. If you are not able to locate which is west, jus ask any bystander the way to go to IIT or Guindy childrens park - they will defntly tell you. You can walk from K.N station to IIT which will take just 10 minutes.

Go to the Pre-Paid autorickshaw booth in front of the station bldg and pay Rs 2 to get a token for IIT Madras on Sardar Patel Road, Adyar. The autorickshaw driver is authorised to take only the fare printed on the token. This is the best way for strangers to the city, who do not know Tamil. The autorickshaw drivers of Chennai are one of the worst behaved men in city.
