I am planning a trip to India. What is the most important thing I should prepare for?Any hints or tips wanted.?

I have never been there and want to see the "real" India. Not commercialized. More nature, history, culture and people. Is there any one language I should learn that will make my trip easier?

it really depends on where u r going. it would be great if u know some hindi since u have to learn it at school but if u r goin 2 south india most people know english. if u r european u r more likely to b pickpocketed so beware and also generally sellers would ask a higher price since they would know ur a tourist. when ever we went to india we always boiled the waterand milk. also it would be a good idea if u took insect repellent...there can be quite a few mosquitos:D

It depends where in India Rajastan is great Jaipur Agra Delhi Ranthambhore to see the tigers. It can be very cold in the mornings. South India much hotter Kerala ,Bangalore, Mysore Pondicherry Ooty Hindi is helpful or Tamil
You will find the people very helpful .Watch out for Rickshaw drivers who will rip you off if they can. They will try and take you to the most expensive shops where they get paid commision. Best time to travel Oct to March.

1. Drink water , Bisleri or Yes or Any good brand name and from shops only ( check for seal )
2. Eat only Hot food, dont eat from road shops , very tempting but might cause problem for your stomach
3. plan your journey. Goa, Kerala , Ooty , Banglore are nice places to see south east way.
4. You will see real india in Mumbai it self so ...
5.Becare ful with taxi and rickshaw driver, try to ask expected cost for journey as they can take you through long route to get more money.
6. You are going to see very beautyful country.. very diverse..
7. So many different culture, food and lives..
8.Dont keep much cash with you. take travellers card or
9. You will get very warm wel-come every part of india as they love foreigners.

Have a nice journey. If you decide which place are you going , you can email me will guide you places to see in that area.

Good luck , Have fun

Never drink water out of a faucet there, i drank water out of the faucet from my relatives' house, and got super sick, so i always stick to bottled water, and dont trust restaurants either. They cheat you. And you have to see the Taj Mahal(i never have seen it but it's so pretty) and go shopping in Chennai( T-nager) they have amazing stores with brand names!

India is about the size of all of Europe, so depending on how much travel time you have, you'll probably need to concentrate on one, maybe two regions. Most folks start in the North by flying into Delhi. The Taj Mahal is about 2 to 3 hours from there by train.

A great place to begin your research is with the India Tourism Bureau. They have two websites to check out: http://www.incredibleindia.org/ and http://www.tourismindia.com. (Take a look at the suggested "circle routes" on this site)
And here's an article about Essential Tips for India: http://www.wickedgoodtraveltips.com/?p=174

I'd suggest picking up some tour brochures from a travel agency (maybe AAA) and study them to get a sense of what routes they use to visit the major sites that interest you.

Um it depends where you go cuz everywhere is different. Every state has its own language and customs, I think. So, it will be different everywhere depending on where you go.

A good place to start in India is Rajasthan. Though it is well traveled, it has so much color and culture you don't want to miss it (and at first at least you'll be happy to have some foreigners to guide you and share stories with)- Pushkar and Udaipur are absolutely amazing. Mt. Abu has good nature and more Indian tourists than Western.

Mumbai and Kolkata are Honest-to-God Indian cities where you can wonder around for hours and people watch, but I'd suggest traveling around smaller towns (like in Rajasthan first), because big cities can be a bit of a nasty culture shock at first (lets just say people can get touchy on the busy streets of Kolkata, particularly if you're a woman).

The South is less traveled than the North- anything bellow Goa is fairly deserted (especially when it gets super hot around March). Also the middle of India, away from the coasts, rarely sees tourists. If you're a daring adventurer, venture into the touristless villages around any city -take a bicycle and a couple of friends, and just bike along the dirt roads, you're guaranteed to see some local color.

Also, Sikkim on the Northeast part of India is absolutely amazing for trekking, not a huge amount of people there (go to Yuksum, it's a lovely village in the mountains)...

Anyway, you'll just go with the flow when you get there, don't plan out too much. Learning a language will take you ages, learn some basic Hindi if you really want to, but a lot of people speak at least bad English, and half of the fun is talking in sing language anyway.
