Don't know where it is you are talking about, but having been on a few long distance bus rides I can tell you that they were all a nightmare!! I always ended up with either a stinky person sitting next to me, or a "talker" who just wouldn't shut up, a bigger person who was sitting in "my space" too because they couldn't fit their girth entirely in their seat, the toilet was gross, etc. The list goes on and on!! If you can financially afford to rent a car, I'd definately go that route (unless the area you are talking about is notorious for violence against tourists or carjackers). Good luck!

journey via bus to manali from shimla is pathetic & horrible. i have presonally experienced this so i can vouch for this. journey by taxi will be more comfortable-my friend took taxi. but pls note that:

1.taxi are available on sharing basis also. that means if u r couple better have another couple for safety. at least psychologically u feel better.

2. mostly alto & maruti omni ply on this route.but bigger MUV like sumo & qualis are also available, but more expensive also. but sharing will split the cost & will be more comfortable for this route.

3.if possible hire from good travel agency in shimla.it'll be more expensive but anyday safer than hiring from stand.pls check on driver, if u are uncomfortable or unsure, don't go ahead.ask in hotels (i mean not sleazy small lodge types, avoid them as they are easy way to get in trouble). most of reuted good hotel have permanent arrangement with travel guys. also, it is a good idea to note the taxi no, driver name & his cell no.& convey this information to your folks at home.

4.generally shimal manali route is safe.but as a precaution, leave shimla early so u can reach manali by late evening.

it is pretty safe if u hire from a trusted source and it is certainly better than the bus journey.....cause i made one by bus from shimla to manali myself and it was pretty bad. But i guess luxury buses would provide more comfort.

i think the idea of renting a car is better as u can stop or change the routes as per ur needs.

@ Maagi

You are not aware of complete facts not all Indians stink you may have ridden a cheap ST bus believe me most of us don't use that at all

--
Riding by bus is economical but you must make sure you go for private transportation - ask your hotels and they'll guide you - usually a Volvo bus is easily arranged which is air-conditioned and quite spacious.

Hi..
To my experiance, bus journey is safe and secure. Shimla to Manali route is not that safe. Provided the Bus travels is good. Have a safe journey.
Take Care
