I am planning to visit India for two weeks. I have never been before. Any itinerary suggestions?

I am interested in getting a glimpse of India as I only have 2 weeks to travel this January. I am interested in seeing the life there and also would like to visit some temples. I few days by water might be nice too. Any itinerary and accommodation suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for clean, safe, budget accommodations.

travelling around india can be a bit exhausting so i would advise to spend 2 weeks just going to a few places so you can relax and feel the atmosphere. kerala is a very easy place to get around without the interruptions and hassles of some other states. if you fly to trivandrum, you have within easy access, national parks, the beaches, kovalum and varkala are good, an 8 hour boat trip on the canals and munnar and marayoor in the mountains, with tea plantations and treks in nature reserves. if you look at a map you will see that this is a small state so to go to any of these places, is not far.
an itinerary i would suggest is trivandrum (city) train to varkala(beach, market stalls and good sea food restaurants, nice walk north along beach) head north and catch boat, day trip along canals, stay a couple of days by the canals (very beautiful and calming) few days at cochin or vypeen island, then bus to mountains. my preference there is marayoor, 40ks from munnar. you can then bus it back to trivandrum inland or back the same way. you will always find a place to stay, that is no problem.feel it out as you go. if you like a place, stay, and don't plan too much ahead and don't try to see everything in one visit.
take minimal luggage and buy an electric mosquito zapper. you plug it in to the wall before sunset.
in kerala there were about 4 beggers and people didn't try to rip me off every time i caught an auto rickshaw, but in the touristy areas they were more intense when trying to sell me clothes or jewellery. hope you enjoy your journey. i lived in india for 3 years and know that it is more crowded and hectic in the north.
vijai tourist home in trivandrum and marayoor tourist hotel in marayoor are both budget with courteous management.
india is a very safe place so don't be paranoid about the dangers of a third world country. it is more dangerous in the west, especially at night.

Two is weeks is not much time specially considering travelling to a land like India which has so much to offer from the North to the South and East to the West in terms of culture, traditions, geography, etc.

My suggestion is travel to any one or two states only else you would have such a hectic time..... you would need another holiday after this holiday.

If going to Goa, there are old churches and temples, a couple of waterfalls as well as the beaches......and some more. Regards accommodation, try out "Cancio's House". It's safe, clean and family run.

My best suggestion is divide your visit by two as North India and South India for each week. For both these tour see the website for a better solution as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation authorised tour operators. They have more than 25 years experienced and heritage in these Industry. Better to contact them to get further more ideas. By seeing these website www.railtourism.com you can see both North India and South India tour itenaries.

as someone has said India is very very Big place, you have to decide first which part you want to travel..

if you go to North... you can visit even Taj-mahal..
Go to Akshar Temple in Delhi.. Delhi is nice place and lots of to see

if you visit south... GO to Goa...
you will love GOA.

Kerala is very nice place in south and with lots of Temples.

Culture and life is very different in each and evey state..

you can see lots of diversity there which is most beautyful thing about india.

Every state has their own language.. food and dress..

visit few web-site and decide first which side you wants to visit this time..

you wont be able to visit whole india in one go..

Be careful with you money as you will be foreigner and you will get so many different type of people

Have a nice journey
Have fun
