i will be leaving from Chicago in two weeks and visitng India for work. the company I am to visit is about 3 hours by train from Mumbai. is the train ok for an american as fas as safety? Do most people speak english? Would most people help me if I need anything?
Also, Is there anything I should be careful of or any dangers I should be aware of? I have never been to India and would just like to know in advance. Are government officials such as police nice to americans? any input is appreciated and thank you in advance for your time. |

Well no body is nice to americans this days (you know who thanks for that).
As for the other parts: "no" most people don't speak english (mostly professionals and well educated people do but that's it); Nice goverments officials and cops? Very unlikely (that's an universal fact on every country).
Be carefull, tourits (from everywhere, on any coutry, even in the US) are the favorite targets of criminals. Avoid looking like "the new kid in town". Avoid wearing clothes that say "I have money", "I'm a tourist", "I have expensive stuff on my bag, please hit me with a bat". India have good people but also bad people, the same way we do, so you can't trust everybody.
Try hiring a guide or that someone from the company show you how to get around safetly on the town. It would be better for you to have someone picking you up instead of trying to find your way around by yourself.
Also avoid "street women" or you will be sorry. |

Welcome to India my dear Friend.
India is the safest place for anyone. You can have a different journey experience by train in India which you'll love it. The police are friendly to Americans especially. Please visit the nearest tourist places in India after which you'll surely understand the most traditional culture in the world. Almost 75% Indians in that region can communicate in English.(If not English, atleast in Hinglish.. a mixture of Hindi and English).
If you need any help, surely the Indians will help you. it is the right time to visit India as it is winter season in India now. Carry Mineral water bottle always as a precaution.
India is the most beautiful place in the entire world, I am sure. It is the Indians who taught the world the civilisation and culture.
Hope you'll have a pleasant trip to India. |

It is better that you ask the company that you are going to visit what is the best mode of travel to reach them - they might send you a car - if traveling by train try to get 1st class tickets.
most of the Indian's know English - good God ! only American's can ask such silly questions!
40 % of the US doctors are Indian's & similar percentage are the IT guys! On the ground you will always get helpful Indian's. if you are worried - get a travel agent or buy a book about India.
you will get more information about India on the US gov sites if you were to google or yahoo travel to india + US gov sites. |

Hi Thank you for choosing to travel to India. Its one of the finest destinations. Mumbai is the commercial capital of India and a big city like New York. Commuter trains in Mumbai are packed and i do not suggest you should take this. The best option is to ask your company to look for an accommodation close to your work place. Traveling 3 hrs on a train to work will drain you out. Like any where in the world you got to take necessary precautions like not flashing your wallet, keep your travel documents safely etc and not to venture out late in nights unsless accompanied by a local. People here are very warm and welcoming and will treat all visitors well.also for health reason drink bottled water and do not eat food on the streets etc.
Packkyour bags and be sure you have a valid visa to travel . Americans mostly forget this as they normally dont visa to travel to most of the places. Also big cities like Mumbai have good number of ATMS and its is easy to draw cash in India. So you donot need to carry cash. Buy a local sim card for cell phone as calling from hotel is normally at a premium.

Yes train will be safe but prefer 1st, 2nd or 3rd AC most of the people in these class are english speaking and you will get help if needed. Yes police people are helping for Americans you will be treated as guest. Safety wise there is nothing special but i will suggest you take your travel related services through some Travel agents or tour operator they always help you and you will be safe you can take check holiday club india .net for some help. You don't worry it will be a great journey |
