Since Old Dehli had some British landsites , the democracy needed a pure Indian style to flow with it. So they made

'Old Delhi' is an ancient city.
'New Delhi' refers to the new 1920s planned city built right next to old Delhi.
The administrative areas of India's government are in New Delhi.
The two form one big city called Delhi. You do notice the difference when you travel around but there is a lot of areas between them and around that are neither - just people's homes and shops and postal addresses are called by which bit they are nearer. |

A new capital city, New Delhi, was built during the 1920s. When India gained independence from British rule in 1947, New Delhi was declared its capital and seat of government. As such, New Delhi houses important offices of the federal government, including the Parliament of India. New Delhi was laid out to the south of the Old City which was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. However, New Delhi overlays the site of seven ancient cities and hence includes many historic monuments like the Jantar Mantar and the Lodhi Gardens.
