A group of armed men attacked several hotels and a train station. They used assault rifles and grenades to kill over 100 people and to injure many more. They also took an unknown number of hostages.

Today the Indian special forces stormed several of the buildings that the men took and freed some of the hostages. Though not all of the men have been taken out yet.

There has been a lot of SPECULATION about who these men are and why they did it. India is blaming Pakistan. It believes that the men either have the support of the Pakistani government or that they were allowed to operate in Pakistani territory by the Pakistani government.

Some people believe that they might be Kashmiri or Bangladeshi separatists who are fighting for independence from India.

Other people believe that they are radical Islamists who are fighting for an independent Islamic homeland.

The Western media is shouting Al Qaeda Al Qaeda Al Qaeda but without any actual evidence of a link other than the fact that the men have AK 47s.

the truth is that nobody actually knows who these men are or what they want. They have not formally named themselves or made any actual demands on the Indian government.

A name for the group was thrown into the pot but it is likely either fake or made up as it claims to represent a region of India that has no history of radicalism (Kinda like calling a group the Montana liberation Army).

It started on Wednesday night and is still continuing. Terrorists bombed the Taj Mahal hotel and the Oberoi hotel, which are 5-star luxury hotels that are landmarks of Bombay. They opened fire in a famous train station as well as a famous restaurant. And they took hostages at a Jewish center. They have targeted American and British people, asking to see people's passports and at one point letting go a man who said he was Italian. But they really did not care who they killed; most people killed were Indian civilians and police officers. All hostages except one were killed at the Jewish center; one child was smuggled out by a staff member, although his parents were killed.

The terrorists arrived in Bombay by boat and have clearly been planning this for some time. They have not been able to confirm who they are. The terrorists claim to be the "Deccan Mujahideen" which is almost certainly a fake name, since 1) no terrorist experts have ever heard of them and 2) like a previous answerer has said, it makes no sense and it would be like a "Montana Liberation Army; there has never been any insurgency in the Deccan Plateau. India has said that there are "Pakistani elements" which is India's answer to any terrorist act. This appears to be true because some of the terrorists have called TV stations in India and they had Pakistani accents, but it seems like this could not have been done without outside or inside help; it might well have been a cooperation with Indian and Pakistani elements. It is unlikely that Al-Qaeda is involved. -- I just read that police have said that a few terrorists claim to be part of Lakshar-e-Toiba, a terrorist group based in Pakistan. This is one of the most sophisticated attacks Bombay (and India as a whole) has seen. Even the motive is not known. "Kashmir" would be an overly simple answer. One of the biggest effects and motives (other than the devastating loss of lives) is the strain this will put on already-strained relationships between India and Pakistan. Representatives of Pakistan's intelligence agency (the ISI) are going to India to "help," even though most Indians (and many Pakistanis) believe the ISI are corrupt and allow terrorism to occur.

Over 150 are killed and over 300 are injured and it isn't over yet. The staff at the hotels have been amazing help to the rest of the people trapped inside; one employee actually took a bullet for a family. And the police and army commandos have done their best. I hope that this horrible act of terrorism will only make India stronger and better prepared to prevent such things from happening again.

If you want to learn more, Twitter is a great source for quick updates and surprisingly, so is Wikipedia.

Sevral cordinated terrorist attacks. 150 people are dead and over 400 people injured (still going up ). They striked in an area where most americans and britsh citizens would visit, like the taj hotel. India's police was outgunned by the terrorist and thier army had to swarm in.

I hope their arent any when i go :D
