I want to fly to India, buy a horse and saddle, and travel across the country...?

Do you think that's a crazy idea?

I've known a couple of people who have been to or lived in India. My friend Dave, a photographer for the National Geographic, goes there quite frequently. He loves it and he has told me all about it and showed me all of his pictures (he has so many amazing ones!). However, he went on foot.

The reason I want to take a horse is because I love horses (especially the breeds native to and around India) and I have a lot of experience with them, not only riding but their health care and management too. My History teacher knows a woman who rode around Afghanistan on a horse and she discovered a beautiful country rich with it's heritage and people. I know they are not the same, but I am drawn to India.

I am positive that this is the place for me. I know it is not always obviously beautiful (sometimes a little dirty) but I think it would be a good way to experience life outside of Canada; learn new perspectives, and do a bit of soul searching.

My boyfriend is willing to come with me for support and because he adores horses as well!

My question is this...

Do you think it's an absolutely crazy idea or is it achievable?

Are there roadways safe enough to travel on a horse?

Anyone who can offer and advice or warnings would be a great help, because I'm trying to weigh out the possibilities before I jump to any conclusions.

No, it is not crazy! I know a lot of people that have traveled parts of India by very unusual transport... although unfortunately, their dream could actually not be realized in full. India will pose a lot of difficulties for your plan. Whereas Afghanistan is a largely rural country, India is not. India traverses several different climate regions, as well, which may not fair well with your horse. I know the journey would take a very long time, too because India is a very big country. You may want to narrow the field of your dream, a bit, and choose only ne particular region...one that you have researched and one that is agreeable to your horse and your plan. Good Luck! Dream Big!

I think it is a crazy idea (Please don't take it offensively). Probably you might end-up in trouble with Blue Cross of India (society that aims to alleviate the suffering of animals in India).

Better travel by air, train, bus, car etc and hire a horse locally. Horse shoes are not designed for concrete and asphalt roads. You can't go long distance on dirt. Good Luck!

It's absolutely possible and achievable. If you are goin to explore the country on a horse, u must select the route and the kind of roads to go through. I would advise you to go through the villages and the wild so that you can see all what you wanted to. That will also keep you safe from the unsafe populated roads( though there are very few roads like this ). There are some roads it will not be safe to ride horses on, but if u plan your route through small cities n villages, it will be no problem. I think you should talk to someone like the National Geographic guy about the route (Dave) or maybe a travel guide.

I think your idea is really cool and achievable as well. I think you'll have a great time.

Please don't rely on other discouraging answers. I don't think there will be such problems. Though it can take a lot of time to travel such a large country but it will be worth it.

You are most welcome to India. I am sure it will be a great experience.

But taking a horse with you really seems to be crazy as India is a big country and sub continent of Asia.

I should agree that the road conditions across the country are not good.

I Luved your idea. Crazy one though. Yet it would be more of a trouble to the poor horse or horses you would having. India is not only vast but its diverse geographycally. Ya I too met once with a person from Nat geo yet remember they travel in specified area with extensive plans. If you too can map out your plans you might be able to fulfil your dream.

Best of Luck n Have a nice time.

Ps: Do share your travel snaps if you fulfil ur dream.

Though the idea is nice and dreamlike, you had better not to do.

Your hip skin will be peeling with horrible aching:}

it would be better educationally and adventurous too if you travel on a horse from where ever u r to india on a horseback.

no roadways anywhere in the world including india are not safe for the horses (oh yeah riders included). since they are not designed for horses but for cars trucks, buses and other mechanised vehicles .

Not a practical idea, because:
1. A lot of time would be spent on feeding and resting the horse.
2. A veternary doctor, specialising on horses may not be available everywhere in India.
3. Honking is very common in India, which may frighten the horse.

I don't think its possible. The maps are not that clear as in the western countries. Roads are getting better. Security wise also it will be a big problem. And if you want to cover whole India in horse it might take years.

simran
you are welcome. this is fantastic idea, very romantic. road ways are safe provided you are not traveling very late night. but its a very large country. your horse cant travel that far. that will take too much of time too. but in places you can ride your horse. come to India and you will fall in love with this vast subcontinent..

A trip to India from Canada is cool but your idea of traveling around on a horse...I am not sure. It will depend on the length of your stay and the places on your trip itinerary.

You can travel on your own without depending on local transport but it may not be safe when you travel on highways and on a horse, you will be exposed to the dusty environment unless you are prepared for it. You have to take utmost care of the horse for if it develops a problem in the middle of a journey, you are not likely to find quick help and have to fix it by yourself.

I think you might also have to carry more baggage which includes stuff for the horse as well ;) Good luck with your adventure
